Nick Potter ArtArt faculty exhibit variety of talents
Fresno State’s Department of Art and Design faculty members are exhibiting examples of their work through March 1, offering visitors to the Conley Gallery of the Phoebe Conley Art Building a broad spectrum of the visual arts. The show, “Synectic Synergy,” displays work by faculty members Lynne Anderson, Kris Kessey, Doug Dertinger, Una Mjurka, Chris Morgan, Joseph Morel, Larry Anderson, Nancy Youdelman and Nanete Maki-Dearsan. Other work is by Larry Anderson, Donnalee Dunne, Nick Potter, Matthew Hopson-Walker, Stephanie Ryan, Edward Gillum, Doug Hansen, Dan Nadaner, Paula Durette, Doug Halderman, Joan Sharma and Linda Richmond. Julian ByzantineClarinet Congress kicks off musical February
February may be the shortest month of the year, but it’s packed with music, beginning with this weekend’s West Coast Clarinet Congress, which focuses on “Woodwinds and Guitar in Entrepreneurship” in a series of performances with admission of only $1 and free master classes. Guitar virtuoso Eric Symons, Corey Whitehead (guitar) and Alan Durst (saxophone) perform at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in the Concert Hall. The congress culminates Saturday, Feb. 3, with a 7:30 p.m. concert featuring Julian Byzantine, a classical guitarist who has performed in 76 nations. Other events in February include Fresno State Jazz Bands A and B (Feb. 9), the Fresno State Horn Workshop (Feb. 10), a concert by Durst (Feb. 11), Junior High Repertoire Project (Feb. 13), Saxophone Studio Recital (Feb. 16), Double Reed Day (Feb. 19) and Die Schöne Müllerin, the Schubert song cycle, l (Feb. 25).

Racial profiling in Cineculture focus
Cineculture, the Central Valley Cultural Heritage Institute, Black Students United and Africana Studies are sponsoring a program that will examine racial profiling with a series of short films and discussions led by Francine Oputa, director of the institute. The event begins at 5:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in McLane 121. Admission is free and the event is open to the campus community.

Brian TurnerLiterary schedule busy for spring
Fresno State’s Master of Fine Arts program is a sponsor of a reading at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, by English professor emeritus Philip Levine at the Fresno Art Museum. It’s the first event in what will be a busy schedule of readings and other activities sponsored by the program and the Fresno State-based San Joaquin Literary Association. Highlights include participation in the annual Rogue Festival of performance art March 1-10; a keynote address by alumnus, adjunct faculty and award-winning poet Brian Turner at the Young Writers Conference on March 28; and a lecture May 4 by creative nonfiction guru Lee Gutkind. Jean-Philippe CollardKeyboard Concerts series spotlights Collard
The Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concert Series and L’Alliance Française de Fresno are co-sponsoring the solo concert by French pianist Jean-Philippe Collard in the Fresno State Concert Hall at 8 p.m. Feb. 14. Collard has chosen a program of works by Beethoven, Schumann and Chopin. Tickets are $12.50 general, $7 seniors and $5 for students. Will Portis will exhibit in President's Gallery
An exhibit of paintings by Will Portis is scheduled this month for the President’s Gallery in the Thomas Administration Building. Portis, who has a gallery in Fresno and also sells his work through a gallery in Monterey, calls his style “natural realism.” A reception is scheduled Feb. 23. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Portis exhibited on campus last year at the Lyles Gallery in the lobby area of the John Wright Theatre. Graham BarberBritish organist Barber performs Feb. 23
Graham Barber, one of Britain’s leading concert organists, will perform at 8 p.m. Feb. 23 in the Fresno State Concert Hall, playing works by Clérambault, Buxtehude, J.S. Bach, Karg-Elert, Stockmeier and Grainger. The appearance is presented by the Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concert Series and the San Joaquin Valley Chapter, American Guild of Organists.
