University Theatre performs ‘The Little Foxes’
Lillian Helman’s acclaimed 1939 play, “The Little Foxes,” makes its Fresno State debut at 8 p.m. Friday, March 2, at the University Theatre. The story is a turn-of-the-20th-century tale of siblings scheming to exploit cheap labor in the poverty-stricken post-Civil War South. Performances are at 8 p.m. March 2, 3 and 6-10 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 4. Click here for details.

Armenian Studies and the USU Diversity Awareness Program are co-sponsors of the eighth annual Armenian Film Festival at 7 p.m. Friday, March 2, in the Leon S. and Pete P. Peters Educational Center of the Student Recreation Center. Two films are on the schedule: “The Story of My Name,” a Dutch film about a man’s discovery of his heritage; and “The Long Journey from the NFL to Armenia,” which chronicles pro football player Rien Vartan Long’s trip to Armenia with his mother and grandmother. British theater history in lecture spotlight
Melissa Gibson, an associate professor of theater history will discuss the British theater’s historiography to provide understanding about the post-World War II period on contemporary British theater. The lecture, at 7 p.m. March 8 in the Alice Peters Auditorium, is part of the Arts and Humanities Lecture Series. Click here for details.

Faculty authors plan readings with students
Three faculty authors and six Master of Fine Arts in creative writing students will participate in a three-part creative nonfiction reading series, "The Problem of Memory," in March and April. Faculty members participating are Steven Church (March 15), John Hales (March 29) and Lillian Faderman (April 13). Each reading will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in the Alice Peters Auditorium in the University Business Center. For details, contact the English Department at 278.2553.

March music calendar begins with a bang
The 16th annual Central California Day of Percussion on Saturday, March 3, starts a busy March calendar of concerts, recitals and other performances in the Music Department. The Concert Choir, Jazz Ensemble and Chamber Singers showcase their music before their annual Central California tour with a concert at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 4, in the Concert Hall. The first full week of the month also includes a concert by the Wind Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 6; a recital by Joseph Murphy (saxophone) and Matthew Slotkin (guitar) at 8 p.m. March 8; and the 15th annual Central California Flute Festival on March 10. Jon NakamatsuKeyboard Concert features pianist Nakamatsu
Jon Nakamatsu, a frequent, concerto soloist, chamber musician, recording artist and soloist throughout the United States, Europe and Japan, will perform works by Scarlatti, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Tjeknavorian and Liszt at 8 p.m. March 9, in the Concert Hall. Nakamatsu’s concert is presented by the Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concert Series and the Central California Nikkei Foundation. Click here for details.

Performance spotlights American Sign Language
The Theatre Performance by Bernard Bragg, an internationally renowned actor, director, playwright and lecturer will perform at 7 p.m. March 9 in the Satellite Student Union will provide an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of American Sign Language. The event, a fundraiser for the Interpreting Students Scholarship Fund is sponsored by the American Sign Language Club, Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Studies and the colleges of Arts and Humanities and Health and Human Services. Tickets can be purchased at the Communicative Disorders Deaf Studies Department office in PHS 252.

Anna HamreCommunity Chorus chorale performs ‘Judas Maccabaeus’
The Master Chorale of the Fresno Community Chorus, directed by Anna Hamre (Music), will perform Handel’s oratorio, “Judas Maccabaeus,” at 8 p.m. March 17 and 3 p.m. March 18 in the Concert Hall. Tickets are $15 for general admission; $8 for students. Click here for details.

Portable Dance Troupe schedules spring concert
Portable Dance TroupeThe Portable Dance Troupe of the Department of Theatre Arts presents innovative, compelling choreography shaped by a mix of faculty and guest choreographers in “Escape,” the troupe’s spring dance concert. The program presents diverse works that help demystify the art of dance. Highlights include guest artist Andy Noble, formerly of the Utah Repertory Dance Theatre, premiering his “The Clothesline,” and Melissa Rolnick, a special guest artist/choreographer this semester, debuting her “Ball Strategies.” Portable Dance Troupe Director Ruth Griffin supplies the program with three dance works, including “Threads of Desire,” which debuted in 1994. Kenneth FroelichNew Music Festival debuts March 29-31
The inaugural Fresno State New Music Festival on campus March 29-31 will provide an opportunity to hear performances of new and original compositions by living composers. A concert by Duo 46, an internationally renowned violin/guitar duet, will include original work by faculty composer Kenneth Froelich. Quintet of the Americas, a New York-based woodwind quintet that has concertized internationally, will make its Fresno debut.

David HiggsOrgan concert features Higgs
David Higgs, the organist who gave the inaugural performance a decade ago of the Elizabeth Lyles pipe organ at Fresno State will perform in concert at 3 p.m. April 1 on the same instrument in the Concert Hall. Higgs will play pieces by Buxtehude, Pachelbel, Kittel, J.S. Bach, Lefébure-Wély, Daquin, Mendelssohn and Schumann. The concert is a joint presentation of the Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concerts Series and the San Joaquin Valley Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Click here for details.

CSU Summer Arts 2007 catalogs available
The 22nd California State University Summer Arts Program will offer 14 intensive two-week courses, including two courses of classes in Florence, Italy, and the rest at Fresno State during July. Classes are open to teachers, arts professionals, serious amateurs and students and cover a range of disciplines, each course emphasizing work with accomplished experts and performance opportunities for the guests artists/teachers and students.
