New ‘Experts List’ developed
Academic Affairs, University Communications and Digital Campus have developed an online "Experts List" designed as a resource for the campus and the community. Faculty and staff are invited to enter information by going to experts.csufresno.edu and following the "How to get listed" link. This may include expertise in academics, administrative topics and even hobbies. Your information will be available online to anyone – most often media – looking for an "expert" at Fresno State. Faculty listed in the previous experts database compiled by the Provost’s Office have been entered in the new list. Updates should be sent to Dennis Nef at dennisn@csufresno.edu. Other questions should be e-mailed to Shirley Melikian Armbruster (University Communications) at shirleya@csufresno.edu.

Library acquires huge photo collection
Howard K. Watkins, an attorney in Fresno who has taken photographs at community events for the past 30 years, is donating more than 150,000 images to the Henry Madden Library. It is the largest collection of photographs documenting a wide range of events, public and private in the region. Click here for details.

Snowfest 2007Snowfest 2007 attracts staff, families
An estimated 125 Fresno State staff members and their families took advantage of a picture-perfect day and plenty of fresh snow for Snowfest 2007 at the Sierra Summit Mountain Resort near Huntington Lake. The 11th annual event featured food, family activities, snow play and drawings for prizes ranging from restaurant dinners and tickets for sports and cultural events to gift baskets, Fresno State apparel, a bicycle and two $100 gift Visa cards. The event was organized by Angel Langridge (University Communications), Rhonda Velasquez (Career Services) and Brad Barker (CIS), with financial support from the Staff Assembly.

Amerasia Week celebrates many cultures
The campus’ 37th Amerasia Week will focus on Lao heritage from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 1, in the Satellite Student Union. Hmong Culture Night will be observed at the same time and place Friday, March 2. Festival Night begins at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 3, also in the Satellite Student Union. March 11 begins Daylight Savings Time
Faculty and staff are reminded that because of the shift in Daylight Savings Time’s beginning from the first Sunday in April to the second Sunday in March, care should be taken with electronic devices or programs with automatic time update features. While some technology accommodates the new March to November DST schedule, some does not. The recommendation from IT is to check electronic gear with clock features on March 11 to be sure it’s correct.

21st annual CSU Student Research Competition
Faculty and staff are encouraged to direct undergraduate or graduate students or alumni who graduated in 2006 to the 2007 Student Research Competition open throughout the CSU system. The competition will be May 4-5 at CSU-Dominguez Hills. Applications are due by March 12 to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. Michael Gorman - Retired Dean of the Henry Madden LibraryBooks for Madden Library honor Dean Gorman
Two books were acquired by the Henry Madden Library to honor the retirement of Michael Gorman as dean of library services the past 18 years. New for the library’s permanent collection are “On Collecting William Morris: A Memoir” by Jack Walsdorf, a friend of Gorman’s, and a first American edition of Mark Twain's “Huckleberry Finn.”

Applicants sought for faculty research award programs
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs seeks applicants for the Provost's Research Activity Awards (RAA) and the Research, Scholarship and Creative Activities (RSCA) program. RAA criteria are tied almost exclusively to projects likely to attract significant funding and awards provide financial support to pay for assigned time and related expenses for a faculty member or team of faculty to develop proposals for major projects. The RSCA program annually provides approximately 28 $5,000 competitive awards, primarily for release time or summer pay. Applications for both awards are due March 19. Click here for details.

Police Department changes phone numbers to help public
The University Police Department is transitioning to new telephone numbers that are easier to remember. The new numbers are 278.8400 for service through the Communications Center and 278.1900 for general police and traffic information. Immediate assistance will remain available via 9-1-1, but that’s accessible only from campus phones. The department’s previous number, 278.2132, will stay in effect until summer.

Lynn Aarti ChandhokBrooklyn teacher wins Levine poetry award
Lynn Aarti Chandhok of Brooklyn, N.Y., a high school English teacher, is the 2006 winner of the Philip Levine Prize in Poetry, sponsored by Fresno State’s Master of Fine Arts program and named for a founder of the university’s poetry writing program. Chandhok’s price includes a $1,500 award and publication of her first book, “A View from Zero Bridge.” Click here for details.

Preview Day welcomes prospective students
Preview Day 2007 is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 24 to give applicants for the fall semester an opportunity to meet with faculty and staff. Information workshops related to admissions, financial aid and student success will be held during the day, and campus and housing tours also will be available. For more information, call 278.2048.

Energy conservation campaign planned
The first campuswide energy conservation campaign begins April 11 and 12 with a Conservation Carnival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day in front of the Kennel Bookstore. Activities, games and prizes will promote conservation to staff, students and faculty as part of a plan undertaken by students in MCJ 159 (public relations cases and campaigns) with support from the Departments of Facilities Management and Public Safety. The multimedia campaign is designed to raise awareness of energy use on campus and present easy ways to conserve. Regional research symposium in April seeks abstracts
The call for abstracts from all areas of investigation has been announced for the 28th annual Central California Research Symposium, scheduled April 12 at the University Business Center. The symposium will share recent research with community investigators in various fields, college students and faculty and is designed to encourage research in the region. Informational meetings focus on research
The Grants and Research Advisory Board plans a series of meetings in schools and colleges for principal investigators and other who are interested in research. The first in the series – for the College of Science and Mathematics -- will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 2, in McLane 16. Sessions are scheduled throughout the next two months. Click here for details.
