Wellness ChallengeWellness Challenge moves toward finale
The campus community Wellness Challenge comes to a close with the grand prize giveaway celebration at 12:15 p.m. May 2 in the Pit of the University Student Union. Also on the schedule is the Stress Less Fair from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, on the University Student Union Balcony. The Spring Wellness Fair, previously known as the Health Fair is scheduled April 24, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Residence Dining Facility. Click here for details.

Employment Web site launch is April 9
The university's new online employment Web site is scheduled for launch Monday, April 9. The site will provide information for all vacant nonfaculty positions, including staff, MPP and student academic employees (GA/TA/ISA). The new E-Recruit system is designed to make the employment process more efficient, up-to-date, accessible and functional. The site will be accessible at http://jobs.fresnostate.edu. Vintage DaysVintage Days begins with pancake breakfast April 19
The 32nd annual Vintage Days celebration begins at 7 a.m. April 19 with the Staff Assembly Vintage Days Kickoff Pancake Breakfast in the Free Speech Area. This years’ “Celebrity Pancake Flippers”, will include administrative staff and coaches. Tickets are $5 for food, music and fellowship. First-generation stories available online
A Web site is carrying stories about first-generation faculty and staff so students will know that many of their professors, counselors and others in the campus community faced obstacles and challenges similar to those they are experiencing. The information comes in the stories of people who were the first in their family to attend college. The project was led by Tina Leimer, Maxine McDonald, Albert Valencia and Shirley Melikian Armbruster. More stories are welcome through the Web site: http://firstgeneration.csufresno.edu.

USDA-FSIS partners with Fresno State
The USDA-Food Safety and Inspection Service has signed a memorandum of understanding with Fresno State to visit the campus twice each year to recruit people to work in the health agency overseeing commercial food product safety. Fresno State is the first university in California with such a memorandum with the agency and one of only five in the nation.

Borrowing from the example of Doritos in asking viewers to produce a commercial to air during the Super Bowl earlier this year, Peter Robertson, the director of annual giving, has launched a contest seeking 25-second videos with the theme “I Am Fresno State!” Faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the university are invited to join the competition for cash prizes and to attend the premiere party at the Bucket (6 p.m. April 25) and the awards party (6 p.m. May 9, also at the Bucket). Fresno State students, faculty, staff and visitors can now catch a ride around campus. The Dog Run, operated by University Police Department Traffic Operations, is providing a shuttle service to the campus community and visitors. Five trams, which each carry up to eight passengers, are an addition to the alternative transportation program and will quickly transport passengers from one side of campus to the other. Wine lovers invited to test sensory skills
Susan Rodriguez (Viticulture and Enology) and graduate student Caryn Chaculski are conducting research about how sensory perceptions of wine taste affect wine enjoyment. To help, the researchers are asking people who are 21 and older and are familiar with red and white wines to take a screening test to determine if they can participate in a panel that will attend weekly tasting sessions through June. ALIS doesn’t live here anymore
The Henry Madden Library is replacing its 15-year-old online catalog system, ALIS, with Millennium, a system used in 4,500 libraries that is designed to be easy for library users to use, intuitive, flexible and easily searchable. The first phase of Millennium installation is scheduled during the spring recess. Scheduled for implementation later this year is Link+, which will make available to Madden Library users more than 20 million titles housed in over 50 California libraries.

Campus acessible technology task force co-chairs appointed
Provost Jeri Echeverria and Lynda Harding were appointed to co-chairs of the campus Accessible Technology Task Force, charged with making campus Web sites, instructional materials and procurement accessible to all individuals. By the end of the semester, subcommittees will have developed accessibility plans in those areas, says President Welty. Fresno State's initial efforts will focus on activities that produce major gains in accessibility with minimum effort.

Peace Garden unavailable for graduation events

The Madden Library’s 10th annual Faculty Publication Exhibit and Reception featured scores of articles, books and other publications by Fresno State faculty members. The list of most-recent publication extends from College of Agricultural Sciences Technology faculty John Bushoven (Plant Science) and Roy Thornton (Viticulture and Enology) to the library’s Julie Moore. Math teacher institute scheduled in July
The Central Valley Math Project, a university partnership with the Fresno, Sanger and Kings Canyon Unified School Districts, plans an intensive summer institute for middle and high school mathematics teachers and Fresno State students planning to be math teachers. Last summer’s institute focused on problem solving and was led by Rajee Amarasinghe, an associate professor in the Mathematics Department and the project’s coprincipal investigator. Math Department colleagues Agnes Tuska and Bill Regonini were part of the organizational and instructional team. This year’s event is scheduled on campus from July 23 to 27. Academic Senate Chair Mike Botwin has announced the redesign of the senate's online presence, accomplished as part of the universitywide "Clean Up the Web" campaign. The new site is at: www.csufresno.edu/senate.

Library gets its footing
In this before and after view at the Henry Madden Library construction site, thick plastic was laid down over crushed rock to form a moisture barrier between the ground and the concrete floor, the first part of which was poured March 21. The remaining sections will be poured by mid-April, followed by structural steel work beginning in May. a lack of rainy days over the winter and early spring have kept the $105-million project on schedule for the late 2008 opening.
