Thomas Attard
(Civil Engineering) will present a paper on ways to control vibrations in steel structures at June’s sixth International Conference on Earthquake Resistant Engineering Structures in Bologna, Italy. The paper was co-authored with R. Dansby. Attard is chairman of the 10th Pan American Congress of Applied Mechanics.
Kathleen A. Curtis
(Health and Human Services, Interim Associate Dean) was appointed dean of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Texas El Paso. Curtis’ new college focuses on border health issues in addition to prevention of illness and promotion and restoration of health: issues with which Curtis has great experience in more than 12 years at Fresno State. A farewell reception is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. April 26 in the Viticulture and Enology Research Center Conference Room.

(Philosophy) was a featured speaker at the Communication and Health Symposium: Health Literacy Across the Continuum of Cancer Care. His presentation was a collaboration with communication master’s candidate Bradley Adame.
Yaw Oheneba-Sakyi
(Africana Studies) will convene a panel, “Representation of the African Family of the 21st Century,” for the Africa-Europe Group for Interdisciplinary Studies second biennial conference July 11-14 in Leiden, the Netherlands. The group is a research network of European studies centers that aims to create synergies between experts and institutions to improve understanding about contemporary African societies. Bruce Roberts
(Plant Science) was among four scientists who provided an educational briefing to congressional staffers and House Soils Caucus co-chairs Jim Costa (D-Calif.), a Fresno State alumnus, Tom Latham (R-Iowa). The scientists provided what Science Policy News reports were “perspectives and recommendations, emphasizing the soil, crop and agronomic research questions requiring answers … to achieve a sustainable bioeconomy.” The information will help in the writing of the farm bill and other legislation.
Mike Summers
(Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship) joined the staff to lead the development of the Technology Development Center to move technology ideas to the commercial market.
Albert Valencia
(Counseling, Special Education & Rehabilitation), director of the Mentoring Institute at Fresno State, received the UCLA-CSU Collaboration Excellence in Mentoring Recognition for 2006. Valencia was nominated by Argelia Lara, a 2004 graduate of Fresno State, doing postgraduate work at UCLA.
John D. Welty
(University President) was among the nation’s top leaders in higher education who participated in a summit meeting in Washington to discuss implementation of a national plan for the future of higher education. The national dialogue among 300 leaders in business, education and philanthropy was convened by Education Secretary Margaret Spellings. For details, click here. Welty also was presented the 2007 Harold Haak Award for Excellence at the Fresno Compact Business Education Awards in March. He was cited for his work on the local, regional and national levels in building partnerships with education and business. The award is named for the late Harold H.
