Michael CaldwellMay offers varied musical feast on campus
Variety is the spice of the campus’ music life in May, with a broad range of concert and recitals on the calendar right up to May 18, the eve of Commencement. The schedule begins with Michael Caldwell’s (Music) trumpet concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, in the Wahlberg Recital Hall. Tickets also are available for performances by Fresno State’s Flute Ensemble (Thursday, May 3), Jazz Bands (Friday, May 4), Wind Orchestra (Sunday, May 6), Symphony Orchestra (Monday, May 7) and the Symphonic Band (May 8). Andrew von OeyenVon Oeyen in Keyboard Concerts spotlight
Pianist Andrew von Oeyen, critically hailed as a soloist since his debut at age 17 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Esa-Pekka Salonen, will perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, in the Concert Hall. The appearance by Von Oeyen, now 25, is part of the Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concert Series and co-sponsored by the College of Arts and Humanities. Lee GutkindCreative nonfiction expert Gutkind speaks on campus
Lee Gutkind, an author, journal founder and anthology editor known worldwide as “The Godfather of Creative Nonfiction,” will give a free public reading at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 4, at the Leon S. and Pete P. Peters Educational Center. His appearance is part of the Visiting Writer Series sponsored by the Department of English’s Master of Fine Arts program in Creative Writing and the San Joaquin Literary Association. Macbeth‘Macbeth’ begins campus run May 4
One of Shakespeare’s defining tragedies, “Macbeth,” is the final play in Fresno State’s 2006-07 Theatre Arts series. The student production, directed by Edward EmanuEl (Theatre), opens at 8 p.m. Friday, May 4, in the John Wright Theatre. Fresno State group plays Antioch Jazz Fest
A Fresno State jazz quartet will perform Saturday, May 5, at the Antioch Collegiate Jazz Festival, a noncompetitive event spotlighting small ensembles. Tickets ($15-$35) are on sale for the festival, which begins at 1 p.m. in the historic El Campanil Theatre in downtown Antioch. Click here for details.

Anna HamreConcert Choir spring concert is May 9
The Fresno State Concert Choir, which is directed by Anna Hamre (Music) will present its spring concert, “Choristers and Other Critters,” at 7:30 p.m. May 9 in the Concert Hall.  Featured will be soprano Brigid deJong and percussionists Matthew Darling and Scott Ney in Bradley Bodine’s “Desert Songs II.”  DeJong and Darling are Fresno State music faculty members. MonteverdiMonteverdi Vespers get rare performance
Claudio Monteverdi's rarely performed Vespers will be presented by Fresno State’s Early Music Ensemble and Chamber Singers and by the Fresno Community Chorus’ Coro Piccolo at 7:30 p.m. May 12 in the Concert Hall. Natasha KislenkoKislenko will play Russian, American piano pieces

Orpheus performance is May 18
French music from the 19th and 20th centuries is on the program when Music faculty member Andreas Werz is the featured artist at the next performance by Orpheus at 8 p.m. May 18 in the Wahlberg Recital Hall. Werz will play Olivier Messaien's “Oiseaux Exotiques”for piano and small orchestra. Admission is free. Details: 277.8784

First CSU Summer Arts application deadline May 21
The deadline to apply for the first session of classes (July 1-14) in the CSU Summer Arts program at Fresno State is May 21. CSU Summer Arts is a series of workshops for individuals of varying abilities taught by masters in a wide variety of artistic disciplines. The masters and their students perform publicly during each cohort. The second session, for which the deadline is June 4, is July 14-28. Click here for details.
