Coffee Hour will illuminate Bangladesh, Canada
The year’s International Coffee Hour presentations conclude with a session Tuesday, May 1, on Bangladesh (with Ashik Ahmed), and one May 8 about Canada (with James Siebert, Presentations begin at 2 p.m. in the University Student Union, Rooms 312-314. There is no charge for the presentations aimed at promoting understanding of people from different cultural backgrounds around the world.

Dr. Glenn GaesserPhysiologist speaks Tuesday, May 1
Dr. Glenn Gaesser, an exercise physiologist who wrote “Big Fat Lies: The Truth About Your Weight and Your Health,” will speak at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, at the Alice Peters Auditorium. The free event is sponsored by the College of Health and Human Services.

 

‘Musa Dagh’ movie is lecture topic
The Armenian Studies Program and Armenian Students Organization are co-sponsors of a presentation at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, by Edward Minasian about his new book “‘Musa Dagh’: A Chronicle of MGM Studios’ Attempt to Produce a Film from Franz Werfel’s Noted Book.” The presentation, which is free, will be in the Alice Peters Auditorium. Entrepreneur workshop is May 5 at Lyles Center
The fourth Invention to Venture workshop will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Lyles Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship. The workshop is an introduction to the process and practice of technology entrepreneurship. There is a $65 charge to attend. Click here for details.

Foreign study scholarship deadline near
Faculty and staff are asked to encourage students with a desire to study abroad to apply for the 2008-09 Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship Awards.  The deadline to apply is Monday, May 7, for the awards of up to $25,000 to cover up to a full academic year of overseas study. University co-sponsors Great Valley Center Conference
The 10th annual Great Valley Center Conference, “New Thinking for a Big Valley,” will be held May 9-10 in Sacramento under co-sponsorship of Fresno State. In addition to presentations about regional topics and issues, there will be a special appearance by legendary Broadway musical-comedy performer Carol Channing, who visited Fresno State in April for a performance and chat with students. James GauntGenocide is lecture topic
James Gaunt, a Swedish university professor and author, will lecture on “Massacres and Resistance: The Genocide of Armenians and Assyrians” at 7:30 p.m. May 8 in the Alice Peters Auditorium. The lecture concludes the commemoration of the Armenian Genocide on campus, which is sponsored by the Armenian Studies Program and the Armenian Students Organization. Matt JamesSports columnist to speak May 11
Matt James, sports columnist at The Fresno Bee, will speak to the Friends of the Madden Library at 6:30 p.m. May 11 in the University Business Center’s Alice Peters Auditorium. James has been at the Bee just over a year after working as a reporter in Selma, Ala., and La Crosse, Wis. Reservations are required and may be made by calling.278.5790.

Reading, reception celebrate San Joaquin Review
A free reading and reception at 7 p.m. May 17 will mark the release of the spring 2007 edition of the San Joaquin Review. The annual student-run publication supports a variety of art and literature and is staffed by candidates for the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing under the aegis of the Department of English. The event will be held in the Alice Peters Auditorium of the University Business Center.

Deadline May 31 for restaurant naming contest
The University Restaurant is looking for a new game to go with its new menu. The name should reflect the Italian accent that complements the traditional California cuisine served in the campus “fine-dining” venue. University Food Services, which operates the restaurant, is offering a prize to whoever submits the winning name by the May 31 deadline. The naming contest is open to all staff and faculty who submit entries via e-mail to lmunt@csufresno.edu.

Dog Days begin in June
Dog Days, the new-student orientation program at Fresno State, will conduct its fall sessions beginning June 5. Each one-day session (there are 16 scheduled through Aug. 2) is an opportunity for new-to-campus students and their parents to learn about the university generally, specific schools and colleges and complete some the preliminary work that will ease their first days at Fresno State.
