Cinco de Mayo observance focuses on immigration
Semana De La Raza, Fresno State’s annual weeklong observance of Cinco de Mayo, continues over the noon hour Tuesday, May 1, with a rally in the Free Speech Area to protest recent immigration raids in central San Joaquin Valley towns. Also on the schedule are a “die-in demonstration” and the movie “Maria Full of Grace” on Wednesday, May 2, and Thursday, May 3’s, Dia del Inmigrante. Click here for details.

New center will focus on regional nursing deficiencies
An open house is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. May 8 at the new Central California Center for Excellence in Nursing at 1780 E. Bullard Ave., Suite 116, Fresno State ’s newest institute responding to a critical community need. The center will focus on developing master’s and doctoral programs for supervisory and specialty nurses and to provide doctorally trained nursing educators, all in short supply in the region. Summer hours arrive May 21
Official work hours will become 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (half-hour lunch) beginning May 21 and continuing through Aug. 17. The schedule was instituted several years ago as an energy-saving measure and now is part of the campuswide initiative to cut energy use and reduce energy cost.

Staff picnic at the movies
“Movie Madness” is the theme of the 11th annual University Picnic, scheduled 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. May 24 at the north end of the Maple Mall near the University Student Union. Chicken and beef tri-tip are on the menu and there will be Best Dressed Office (movie theme) and Best Dressed Actor/Actress (look-alike) competitions. Also on the schedule are volleyball, horseshoes and the Oscar Run (stick race). BulletinBoard will carry details as plans are made.

Wellness ChallengeWellness Challenge Celebration scheduled May 2
Winners will be chosen for the grand prizes at the campuswide Wellness Challenge Celebration at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, in The Pit of the University Student Union. The event marks the conclusion of the Wellness Challenge, which began in February and represented a multifaceted effort to increase awareness about fitness and a broad range of health issues. The guest speaker will be author Glenn Gaesser, who wrote “Big Fat Lies: The Truth About Your Weight and Your Health.”

Karen CareyCarey appointed dean of graduate studies
Karen Carey will become the new dean of graduate studies, but won’t take her new position until after she serves as interim dean of the College of Science and Mathematics through the hiring of a new dean. She has served as associate dean of the college. Carey joined the Department of Psychology in 1989 and also served as coordinator of the School Psychology Program and co-director of the joint doctoral program in educational leadership during her tenure at Fresno State. Janette Redd WilliamsWilliams named associate vice president
Janette Redd Williams has been appointed associate vice president for academic personnel. She joined the campus administration as interim associate director of academic personnel in January 2005 after being assigned by the California State University Office of General Counsel as counsel to the Fresno State campus. Fitness program seeks second-session participants
The second session of Life Work Links’ “Get Fit!” program will begin May 16 with toning, strengthening, stretching and core work from noon to 1 p.m. each Monday, Wednesday and Friday through June 1. The class is conducted by Healthy Campus Program coordinator Melanie Goldberg, a certified personal trainer, outside Lab School Room 185. Classes are limited to 20 people. Parking Lot V full closure begins May 21
Parking Lot V will be closed completely beginning May 21 to complete renovation of the lot surface and to build a covered parking structure with solar photovoltaic panels on the roof.  This Fresno State partnership with Chevron Energy Solutions will cover 722 parking spaces and generate about 20 percent of the university’s electricity demand. The project is anticipated to be complete in August. Click here for details.

Bike to Work Week is May 14-18
With gas prices sky high, Earth Day less than a month in the past, the campus Wellness Challenge just behind and the summer swimsuit season just ahead, Bike to Work Week will be held May 14-18 in Fresno County. The week’s activities include the second annual Bike to Work Day Corporate Challenge on May 17 in which Fresno State competes against teams from businesses and other organizations. Fred RuizFred Ruiz salute June 29 will benefit Ag-One
A community salute honoring Fred R. Ruiz, co-founder, chairman and CEO of Ruiz Foods in Dinuba, is scheduled June 29 at the Fresno Convention and Entertainment Center to benefit the Ag One-Fred Ruiz Scholarship Endowment fund. Scholarships from the fund are awarded to students pursuing degrees through the College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology. Ruiz is being honored for his support of California agriculture through his company, the nation’s largest maker of frozen Mexican food, and a lifelong commitment to children and education. Campaign urges energy conservation
Betsy Hays and Tamyra Pierce (both Mass Communication and Journalism) led a campaign designed by their students to promote habits of energy conservation to faculty, staff and students with a slogan, “Care, Commit, Conserve: Turn it off, Fresno State!”. The campaign included a Conservation Carnival with games, music, food and information and classroom announcements that recommended turning off lights, closing windows and doors when air conditioning/hearing is on and turning off computers and monitors when not in use. The effort was promoted by the university’s Utility Management and Public Safety divisions.

Faculty, alumnus lead physics students on field trip
Amir Huda, Charles Tenney and Doug Singleton (all Physics) led students on a tour of UC-San Francisco’s new Center for Molecular and Functional Imaging. The group was hosted by Bruce Hasegawa, a Fresno State alumnus.

Retirements announced
This is the final semester for some members of the Fresno State faculty and administration. Retirement announcements have been made by John Crossley (Recreation Administration/Leisure Studies), Lillian Faderman (English), Robert Paull (Health Services) and Judith Rosenthal (English).

Memorial Mass for Professor Emeritus Ciula is May 2
A memorial Mass for Richard Ciula (Chemistry, Emeritus) will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, at the St. Paul Newman Center. Dr. Ciula, who taught at Fresno State for 38 years, died April 26. He was 73.

Donald Flores service is May 4
Graveside services for Donald Flores, a former Henry Madden Library employee, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 4, at the Sanger Cemetery, 568 S. Rainbow Ave. Mr. Flores, who retired June 30 after more than 10 years at Fresno State, was 63.

Memorial will be scheduled for Jean Magana
A memorial service is being arranged for Jean Magana, who worked at the Henry Madden Library for 15 years before retiring in 2004. She was 70 when she died April 28. Details of her memorial service will be posted on BulletinBoard.

Death claims Professor Emeritus Hiatt
Arthur Hiatt (Mathematics, Emeritus) died in Cambria on April 17. He taught at Fresno State for 20 years until his retirement in 1994. Dr. Hiatt was 73.

Madden Library’s Pat Lavigna dies
Pat Lavigna, who was in charge of circulation at the Henry Madden Library, died April 21 of cancer. She was 55. At her request, no formal funeral service was conducted.

Death takes retired educator William Murray
A memorial service for William Murray, who retired in 1995 as supervisor of student teachers at Fresno State, was conducted April 26 in Fowler. Mr. Murray was 86.
