Bass trombone recital starts musical September
Fresno State trombone instructor Steve Trapani kicks off the university’s month of musical performances with a solo bass trombone recital. Faculty exhibitions bring ArtHop attention Sept. 6
Two art faculty exhibitions are in the spotlight on campus during September with receptions for both from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, as part of the community ArtHop. Larry Anderson’s work is on display through Oct. 3 in the Conley Gallery in the Phebe Conley Art Building. CineCulture fall film series begins
The CineCulture Club fall season begins at 5:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, in McLane 121 with a screening of “Darwin's Nightmare.” The Oscar-nominated documentary reports on the fish-for-guns trade that thrives in Africa. The film will be followed by a discussion led by Phillip Vieira, a Fresno State student. CineCulture presents provocative and illuminating movies each week at no charge to faculty and staff. Poet Sam Hamill will read from his works Sept. 11
Sam Hamill, a poet and founding editor of Copper Canyon Press in Port Townsend, Wash., will sign his books and give a reading at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Leon S. and Pete P. Peters Education Center in the Student Recreation Center. Hamill founded Poets Against the War in 2003, which led to the largest single-theme poetic anthology ever assembled. Dance auditions are Sept. 11

Arts & Humanities launches new lecture series
Alumna Diana Meehan, an author, documentarian and educator, will be the first guest of the College of Arts and Humanities Distinguished Alumni Lecture Series. Meehan will sign copies of her book, “Learning Like a Girl: Educating Our Daughters in Schools of Their Own,” and speak at 6 p.m. Sept. 26 in the Wahlberg Recital Hall. Click here for details.

Greg Anderson, a history professor at Ohio State University, will deliver the Phebe McClatchy Conley Lecture at 7 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Leon S. and Pete P. Peters Education Center. Anderson’s topic is “The Mystique of the Ancient Greek Olympics.” Click here for details.
Author Chacon will read at COS
Alumnus Daniel Chacon, the English Department’s Visiting Writer a year ago, will read from a forthcoming collection of stories, “Chicano Kabbalah,” and speak about metaphor, mysticism and writing at College of the Sequoias in Visalia. The event, which is free, is at 7 p.m. Sept. 27 in Ponderosa Hall (Room 350).
University Theatre season tickets on sale
Tickets are on sale for the 2007-08 University Theatre season, which begins with David Ives’ “Polish Joke.” The premiere production opens Oct. 5 and closes Oct. 13. Yarbrough will speak at Library dinner
During the annual dinner of the Friends of the Madden Library, Steve Yarbrough (English) will read from his most recent novel and talk about what it’s like to live in California and write about his native Mississippi. Yarbrough’s “The End of California,” published in hardback last year, came out in paperback over the summer. The dinner is scheduled at 6 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Smittcamp Alumni House. Keyboard Concert series begins with Sa Chen
The Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concert Series season opens with 2005 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition bronze medalist Sa Chen playing works by J.S. Bach, Chopin and Mussorgsky. Her concert begins at 3p.m. Sept. 30 in the Concert Hall on campus. Click here for series details.

Authors, illustrators, teachers, librarians, collectors and fans of children’s books and young adult literature will gather on Oct. 6 for a conference titled “Painted Words and Spoken Pictures,” featuring award-winning writers and illustrators.
