President Welty announces community service initiative
President John Welty’s Fall Assembly addresses put a special focus on community service. He said he’s proud of the 6,300 students who contributed 460,000 hours to community agencies working on some of the region’s most difficult social challenges. Welty added that by the university’s centennial in 2011, his goal is to have faculty, staff and students contribute 1 million hours of community service annually. Click here for more information.

Community Service Opportunities Fair will be Sept. 5
The 15th annual Community Service Opportunities Fair is scheduled for 10a.m.-2p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5 in the Memorial Garden area, south of the Kennel Bookstore. About 70 nonprofit agencies will provide information about volunteer opportunities. The event is organized by the Office of Civic Engagement and Service-Learning and is open to students, faculty and staff. Click here for more information.

Stephen LewisLewis training for leukemia benefit bike ride
Stephen Lewis (Earth & Environmental Sciences) has joined the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training Program to prepare for the 109-mile El Tour de Tucson bicycle race in November. Lewis is dedicating his effort to a faculty colleague who was diagnosed with leukemia. Lewis hopes to raise $6,000 for leukemia research. Click here for more information.

Raus and quilters help fill needs
Lor-Rae Raus (Human Resources) is president of the San Joaquin Valley Quilters Guild, whose members make quilts for such community institutions as the Marjaree Mason Center, Evangel Home, Children’s Hospital Central California and Craycroft Youth Center. Other quilts are provided for the Veterans Administration Hospital, convalescent homes and to the California High Patrol and Fresno County Sheriff’s Department. Click here for more information.

Nursing students conduct blood drive
Robert Fire’s 24 entry-level master’s nursing students organized a blood drive and health fair outside Chevy’s Restaurant at the River Park shopping center, which brought more than 80 units of donated blood. Using the tag line “Because the need for blood never takes a vacation,” the campaign helped educate the community about the need for summer blood donation via public service announcements, news coverage and T-shirts.

Albert ValenciaValencia’s swim benefits needy students
Albert Valencia (Mentoring Institute) joined several hundred of his new best friends in chilly San Francisco Bay, where he swam the mile-and-a-half from Alcatraz to Aquatic Park in Sharkfest 2007. His swim helped raise $1,200 for Swimming for Books, which buys textbooks, then loans then at low cost to needy Fresno State students.
