Outwitting HistoryAuthor Aaron Lansky will discuss Yiddish literature
The College of Arts and Humanities is cosponsoring a lecture by Aaron Lansky, author of “Outwitting History: The Amazing Adventure of a Man who Rescued a Million Yiddish Books,” to be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Temple Beth Israel (6622 N. Maroa Ave.) Lansky is director of the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Mass. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. For information, call  432.2162 or 226.4978.

Classical, vocal, instrumental events jam October music schedule
Eleven events are on the Department of Music’s October calendar, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, with a percussion concert by Darin Wadley in the Concert Hall. Other attractions are the French horn studio recital (Oct. 11), Symphonic Band concert (Oct. 16), “Brahms and … ” (Oct. 17), Wind Orchestra concert (Oct. 18) and the Fresno State Choral Invitational (Oct. 19, 24 and 25). Born into BrothelsFilm explores lives of Indian prostitutes’ children
The CineCulture Club’s October lineup of independent films begins Friday, Oct. 5, with the acclaimed documentary “Born into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids,” released in 2004. Joan Sharma (Art and Design) will lead a post-screening discussion. Also scheduled in the CineCulture series this month are “The Education of Shelby Knox” (Oct. 19) and “The A-bomb” (Oct. 26), with the post-screening discussion led by Amir Huda (Physics). Polish JokeUniversity Theatre season opens with ‘Polish Joke’
The curtain rises on the 2007-08 University Theatre season at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, when David Ives’ controversial “Polish Joke” debuts in the Arena Theatre. Ed EmanuEl directs the play about a man struggling with his ethnic identity as he tries to find a way through life that skirts being the punchline of American jokes.  “Polish Joke” runs through Oct. 13. Tickets  are available through the University Theatre Box Office in the Speech Arts Building, which is open noon-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Phone: 278.2216.

AlikiArne Nixon Center hosts children’s literature conference
"Painted Words and Spoken Pictures" is the theme of a conference Saturday, Oct. 6, at Fresno State that will attract authors, illustrators, teachers, librarians, collectors and fans of children's and young adult literature. The conference is sponsored by the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children's Literature, and the North Central California Chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. Speakers include Aliki, an award-winning author and illustrator of 200 children’s books, Newbury Award-winner Karen Cushman (“The Midwife’s Apprentice”), illustrator Yuyi Morales (“Harvesting Hope: The Story of Cesar Chavez”) and author Carolyn Yoder (“George Washington: The Writer). All that jazz
If Jazz is more your musical thing, the Jazz Composers Orchestra, under the direction of Michael Dana (Fresno City College, and Fresno State’s award-winning Jazz Band “A,” led by Michael Caldwell (Music) will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8. And on Oct. 28, saxophonist Bob Reynolds performs with Fresno State Jazz Bands “A” and “B.”

Acclaimed film composer Atmajian schedules lecture
Jeff Atmajian, a film composer and orchestrator who has worked on several Oscar-nominated movies, will speak at 7 p.m. Oct. 22 in the Concert Hall as part of the new College of Arts and Humanities Distinguished Alumni Lecture Series. Atmajian received his bachelor's in music in 1984 from Fresno State. Click here for details.

Contemporary masters embraced by Empyrean Ensemble
The Empyrean Ensemble will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23 in the Wahlberg Recital Hall. The Empyrean Ensemble plays work from the best-known 20th century composers as well lesser-known and newer works, some created by the group’s seven-musician core. Andreas HaefligeKeyboard Concerts welcomes pianist Andreas Haeflige
Works by Beethoven and Schubert are planned by Swiss pianist Andreas Haeflige for his Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concert Series appearance at 8 p.m. Oct. 26 in the Concert Hall. Haefliger has won plaudits worldwide for his mastery of Beethoven and performances that link his work with that of other masters. Urban Bush WomenCSU Summer Arts already planning for July 2008
Plans are being made for the 2008 CSU Summer Arts program at Fresno State after a successful 2007, when 14 courses in the visual and performing arts attracted 375 students and 112 guest artists/teachers. More than 5,100 people came to the 32 public performances and student culminations that surround the program, which has been conducted at Fresno State since 1999 and will stay on campus through 2010. The 2008 lineup of courses and some of the instructors (including Urban Bush Women) can be viewed at www.csusummerarts.org.
