Casual off-campus scientific forum begins Oct. 1
Central Valley Cafe Scientifique! begins providing a monthly forum for dialogue between scientists and nonscientists on a broad range of scientific topics when it debuts Monday, Oct. 1 at Lenny’s Bistro Deli at the River Park shopping center. The first presentation – “Cute, cuddly and dead – so what’s killing sea otters?” – begins at 7 p.m. with Paul Crosbie (Biology). Cafe Scientifique! is modeled on an example in the United Kingdom, people who don't normally seek out science seminars listen to a brief presentation, then converse about it over food and drinks. Peace Garden at Fresno StateStop the Hate activities scheduled at Fresno State
A candlelight vigil for world peace is scheduled at sunset (just before 7 p.m.) Tuesday, Oct. 2, in the Peace Garden, just north of the Henry Madden Library and west of the Free Sspeech Area. The event is an observance of the International Day of Non-Violence, declared by the United Nations in honor of Mahatma Gandhi, one of four people of peace whose statues stand in the campus garden.

Women in Black plans silent vigil
The Women in Black silent vigil is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at the speakers platform on the west end of the Free Speech Area. Click here for details or call 278.4593.

International Culture Night features performances
“One World for One Night” is the theme of the 23rd International Culture Night at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, in the Satellite Student Union. Performances by Fresno State students and professional groups will provide a glimpse of the cultures of Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Japan, Laos, Mexico, Peru and Spain. Admission is free, but seating is limited and no standing is permitted.

Winetasting will benefit ag programs, students
The Fresno-Madera Alumni and Friends Wine Tasting Social on Oct. 19, will showcase Fresno State wines – some still in barrels – at a $35-a-person fundraiser benefiting the College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology and the Ag One Foundation. The program begins at 4:30 p.m. with a guided tour (reservations necessary because of limited space), followed by the tasting and hors d’oeuvres in the winery. The reservation deadline is Oct. 12; price rises to $40 after that. Call 278.4266.

Depression screenings available Oct. 18
University Health and Psychological Services will host a National Depression Screening Day screening event 9 a.m.-to 4 p.m. Oct. 18 for staff, faculty and students. Participants will complete a questionnaire, watch a video and meet individually with a Psychological Services counselor for a discussion of both. Each screening takes about an hour and is free. Instructors are invited to encourage students to attend the event by providing an extra-credit incentive to help acquaint students with services available to them. University Lecture Series season begins Oct. 2
Alumna Jan Yanehiro, a broadcast journalist, and entrepreneur Michealene Cristini Risley inaugurate this year’s University Lecture Series at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, in the Satellite Student Union. They’ll discuss “This is Not the Life I Ordered,” which they co-authored with former state Sen. Jackie Speier. Advance tickets for faculty and staff cost $6 per event ($8 on the day of the event). Roger TatarianPolitics and contemporary communications is forum topic
“Politics and the Digital Age” is the subject of this year’s Roger Tatarian Journalism Forum on Friday, Oct. 5. Dan Walters, a veteran McClatchy newspaper political columnist, will give the keynote address at 10:30 a.m., following a panel discussion at 9:15 a.m. among David Schecter (Political Science) and Sally Tannenbaum (Communication), Christine Park (KFSN, Channel 30) and Jim Boren (The Fresno Bee). They’ll focus on the Internet’s impact on traditional campaign communication methods. The forum will be in the Satellite Student Union and there is no admission charge. Click here for details.

Lyles Center offers legal advice for startup businesses
The special legal needs of entrepreneurial businesses will be addressed during a workshop at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 18 that is co-sponsored by the Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Joining the campus center are the California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley, Fresno County Bar Association, San Joaquin College of Law and the Greater Fresno Chamber of Commerce. Donations sought through Oct. 22 for Staff Assembly auction
The Staff Assembly Executive Committee is seeking donations for the silent auction at the Fall Harvest Pie and Ice Cream Social on Nov. 15 at the University Courtyard Dining Facility. The auction raises money for the spring staff awards luncheon by offering bargains to bidders on such items as gift baskets, framed pictures, wine, gift certificates, movie tickets and clothing. Tim FlanneryClimate change in ULS spotlight Oct. 30
Tim Flannery, who wrote “The Weather Makers: How Man Is Changing the Climate and What It Means for Life on Earth,” will discuss stopping and reversing effects of human-caused climate change, when he speaks Oct. 30 at a University Lecture Series presentation. Flannery, an Australia museum director, will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the Satellite Student Union. Click here for details.

Grad ExpoGrad Expo scheduled Nov. 1
The Division of Graduate Studies is hosting Grad Expo 2007, a communitywide graduate student recruiting event, from 2:30 to 7 p.m. Nov. 1 in the Student Recreation Center. The expo encourages Fresno State juniors and seniors and working professionals to apply to one of the university's 45 graduate degree programs. In addition to information, there will be on-site counseling for admissions, testing, financial aid and career services.

Pre-Law Day provides information
Faculty and staff are encouraged to tell students interested in pursuing careers as lawyers about the Department of Philosophy’s annual Pre-Law Day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Nov. 7. More than a dozen law schools have confirmed attendance for the event held on campus to provide information to the students and anyone else interested in law. The event is co-sponsored by the Pre-Law Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity International. Dog Days for spring newcomings set for November, December
Dog Days – the new-student orientations for spring semester – are scheduled Nov. 16, 20 and 28 and Dec. 6 and 14. Faculty and staff participate in the twice-yearly opportunities to acquaint new-to-campus students and their parents with what’s available at Fresno State. Students also get the chance to complete some of the paperwork that will ease their arrival on campus for the new semester. Click here for details.
