Art of Doug HansenHansen exhibit opens in Lyles Gallery
An exhibit of watercolor illustrations by Doug Hansen (Art), an award-winning artist,  opens Thursday, Nov. 1, in the Lyles Gallery of the Speech Arts Building. “Picturing Heirlooms” will display illustrations from farmer and author Mas Masumoto’s new book, “Heirlooms: Letters from a Peach Farmer.” Hansen illustrates Masumoto’s monthly columns in The Fresno Bee and also collaborated with the author to illustrate “Letters to the Valley,” published in 2004. The exhibition will be up through Nov. 28 (noon-5 p.m. weekdays) and a reception is planned Nov. 15. Click here for details.

President’s Gallery presents Dertinger’s intriguing photos
Faculty member Doug Dertinger (Art and Design), whose specialty is studio art at Fresno State, is exhibiting “Requiem” in the President’s Gallery of the Thomas Administration Building. The photographic exhibit will be mounted through Nov. 14. The gallery is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

'Doubt'Fresno State’s ‘Doubt’ has double premiere Nov. 2
“Doubt,” a drama about child-abuse suspicions and tested faith in the Catholic Church, makes its Fresno premier Friday, Nov. 2, in the newly named Dennis and Cheryl Woods Theatre. Kathleen McKinley (Theatre) directs John Patrick Shanley’s much-praised play, which will be presented through Nov. 10 in what formerly was the Arena Theatre in the Speech Arts Building. Bowling for ColumbineCineCulture begins November with ‘Bowling for Columbine’
Fresno State’s CineCulture Club opens its November schedule of films at 5:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, with “Bowling for Columbine,” Michael Moore’s exploration of people and issues surrounding the tragic high school shootings in suburban Denver in 1999. CineCulture’s schedule for November includes a presentation Nov. 9 in collaboration with Fresno Filmworks, the Lunafest on Nov. 10, “Invisible Children” on Nov. 16 and “Thirst” on Nov. 30. Films screened exclusively by CineCulture in McLane 121 are free and feature discussions after the presentations.

American choral music on display Nov. 4
An eclectic program of American choral music – “Where Earth Meets the Sky” – will be performed by the Fresno State’s Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Jazz Lab Choir, and Men’s and Women’s Ensembles at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, in the Concert Hall. Anna Hamre (Music) will direct the concert, which features the world premiere of “Baskets,” by Benjamin Boone and lyrics by Helene Joseph-Weil (Music). Another new work, “I Lie a Lot,” was arranged by Fresno City College instructor Dale Engstrom, whose daughter, Katie, a Fresno State student, will be the soloist. Tickets are $7 general, $5 seniors and students.

Staff accompanists featured in concert
“2 x 2” will feature Fresno State music staff accompanists Natasha Kislenko with Hatem Nadim in a four-hand piano concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4. The performance will be in the Concert Hall. Tickets are $5 for faculty, staff, seniors and students.

Musical performance calendar crowded in November
November’s Music Department concert schedule begins at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, with a performance by the Percussion Ensemble in the Concert Hall. The schedule of performance featuring Fresno State student and faculty musicians includes the Opera Workshop (Nov. 17-18), Clendenin Brass Quintet (Nov. 18). Percussion Studio Recital (Nov. 26), Guitar Ensemble (Nov. 28), Flute Ensemble (Nov. 29) and the Faculty Guitar Recital (Nov. 30), featuring faculty guitarist Corey Whitehead. Graduate student’s art exhibited in Conley Gallery
Graduate student L.K. Papadakis’ paintings will be exhibited in the Conley Gallery of the Phebe Conley Art Building from Nov. 8 to 16. Lunafest2007 Lunafest films will be screened Nov. 10
This year’s Lunafest presentation of films by, for and about women is scheduled at 7 p.m. Nov. 10 in the Satellite Student Union. Proceeds from the event ($8 students, $10 general in advance; $10/$12 at the door) benefit the Breast Cancer Fund and the Women’s Resource Center. Fresno Community Chorus sets three concerts on campus
The Fresno Community Chorus’s Master Chorale and Coro Piccolo will perform three concerts in the Concert Hall under the direction of Anna Hamre (Music). One is a performance for children at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 10 with the Bach Children’s Choir, which includes a book giveaway. The other performances are at 8 p.m. Nov. 10 and 3 p.m. Nov. 11, featuring John Rutter’s “Wind in the Willows” and Morten Lauridsen’s “Lux Aeterna.”  The Fresno Community Chorus is a diverse group of volunteer singers from Fresno and surrounding communities, including several from the Fresno State music community. Shepard drama will be performed by Experimental Theatre troupe
Fresno State’s Experimental Theatre Company will perform “A Lie of Mind,” Sam Shepard’s twisted tale of dysfunctional families, Nov. 16-17 in the Lab School 101 Theatre. Bill MaysJazz pianist Bill Mays featured on campus
One of the nation’s premier jazz pianists, Bill Mays, will perform at Fresno State as a special event in the Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concert Series, co-sponsored by JazzFresno and the campus radio station, KFSR, FM 90.7. In a 7:30 p.m. Nov. 25 performance in the Concert Hall, Mays will be joined by Marvin Stamm (trumpet) and Alisa Horn (cello). Together the trio is Inventions. Mays and Stamm also will present at three free clinics on campus, co-sponsored by the Fresno State Department of Music. Click here for details.

San Joaquin Review seeks material for spring edition
The San Joaquin Review is accepting manuscripts in fiction, poetry, nonfiction and drama for its spring 2008 edition through Dec. 21. E-mail submissions are requested for text pieces with attachments in Microsoft Word, Appleworks or Rich Text formats. Art, photography and drawings also will be considered for publication.
