Red Friday coming Nov. 2
Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs is sponsoring Red Friday on Nov. 2 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the University Student Union Pavilion. Refreshments, drawings for prizes, conversation with colleagues and spirit building are among the attractions.
Forensic science is topic for Nov. 5 Cafe Scientifique
“Over My Dead Body,” a coffee house discussion about forensic science led by Kevin Miller (Chemistry) will be the next Central Valley Cafe Scientifique event at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5 at Lenny’s Bistro Deli in the River Park shopping center. Cafe Scientifique, modeled on programs that began in England, are opportunities for the public to gather informally with scientists and explore developments and disciplines in discussion. Stories of women in prison next book club topic
"Couldn’t Keep It to Myself,” a collection of stories by 11 women in a Connecticut prison, is the subject of the next Women’s Resource Center Book Club discussion on Tuesday, Nov. 6. The discussion will be about the first 94 pages of the book edited by Wally Lamb. Participants are encouraged to obtain a copy of the book and read those pages prior to the meeting. The book club meets 11:30 a.m-12:15 p.m. at the Women’s Resource Center, just east of the Henry Madden Library. Details available by calling 278.4435.
Author will talk about writing from the second generation
Aris Janigian, a Fresno native and second-generation Armenian American, will speak about “The Gift and Burden of Memory: Writing from the Second Generation,” at the Friends of the Madden Library meeting Nov. 9 in the Alice Peters Auditorium at the University Business Center. Janigian is a former professor of humanities at the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles, whose debut novel was “Bloodvine.” Janigian’s new novel, from which he will read Nov. 9, is “Riverbig.” The event is part of the organization’s “Writers of Western America” series. Author will discuss Armenian American writers
David Kherdian will discuss his new book, “Forgotten Bread: First-Generation Armenian American Writers” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 in the Leon S. and Pete P. Peters Educational Center of the Student Recreation Center. The lecture is part of the Armenian Studies Program’s Fall Lecture Series, which is co-sponsored by the College of Arts and Humanities, the Department of English and the Armenian Students Organization. Tickets at $2 are available for the Staff Assembly Fall Harvest Pie and Ice Cream Social and Silent Auction, an annual fund-raiser set for 11a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 15 in the University Courtyard Dining Hall. Dog Days has three November dates
Dog Days new-student orientations for the spring 2008 semester will be held Nov. 16, 20 and 28 to help ease the transition to the Fresno State campus. Faculty, staff, administrators and students are available in Dog Days to provide information and help incoming students complete some of the paperwork necessary to study at Fresno State. Spring 2008 London Semester final orientation Nov. 18
The final orientation session for potential participants in the 2008 London Semester program is scheduled at 4 p.m. Nov. 18. For-credit classes in art, English, history, humanities and theater are available in the program, which is open to students, faculty, staff and the general community. In addition to classes and studies. Program-sponsored field trips visit Stonehenge, Salisbury, Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford, Cambridge, Bath, Canterbury and York and historical London. Thanksgiving recess ahead
The Thanksgiving recess period is Nov. 21-23, which means no classes on Nov. 21, the campus closed Nov. 22 and most campus offices not operating Nov. 23. Nov. 21 is considered a regular university workday with all campus offices expected to remain open. The Henry Madden library will be open 7:45 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 21 and closed Nov. 22-24, reopening Nov. 25. Human Resources will answer questions at 278.2364.
Maddy Intern Scholars deadline approaching
Faculty and staff are reminded that the Kenneth L. Maddy Institute at Fresno State is accepting applications through Nov. 30 for its Intern Scholar Program in the spring and summer. The spring program places students in district offices of members of Congress, the state Assembly or the California Senate. The summer program sends students to Washington, D.C., or Sacramento offices of legislators from the region. Click here for details.
Workshop will help local businesses obtain federal grant money
Fresno State’s International Center for Water Technology will conduct a workshop Nov. 30 to educate businesses on how to obtain some of the $2 billion in research and development grants awarded annually by the federal government. The workshop, held at the WET Center incubator on campus, is intended to encourage product innovation among local businesses. Center director David Zoldoske said the workshop is intended to help businesses in the central San Joaquin Valley get a bigger share of the grant money. Click here for details.
Shopping trip planned to San Francisco
An opportunity to do your holiday shopping in San Francisco or just have a day of sightseeing is offered by USU Productions on Dec. 1. Snowfest 2008 is Feb. 9 at Sierra Summit
Plans are already being made for the next Staff Assembly-sponsored Snowfest, a day of family fun in the snow for Fresno State employees, on Feb. 9 at Sierra Summit Mountain Resort, near Huntington Lake. It’s an opportunity to ski, snowboard or play in the snow with your family, enjoy your colleagues’ company and enjoy some food and drink. Details will be coming after the new year.
