Michael Caldwell
(Music) completed his sixth marathon, holding a 10-minute pace for the first 20 miles and 11:37 in the final 6.2 miles of the marathon through the streets of Portland, Ore. His pace in the first part of the race was faster than he’s ever run in training and the final portion was better than his overall pace in any previous marathon, giving him a time of 4:30:17, vs. his personal best 5:02:25.
Ellen Gruenbaum
(Anthropology) will engage in a preliminary investigation of the cultural practices of female genital cutting in west Africa, following her work in northeast Africa in 2004 with colleagues from UNICEF Sudan and CARE Sudan. Gruenbaum joined a task force that visited Ethiopia in March at the invitation of UNICEF, to participate in the first of a series of “Global Meetings on the Research of the Social Dynamics of Abandonment of Harmful Practices.”

(Modern & Classical Languages & Literatures) reports her book, “Finding Magic Mountain: Life with Five Glorious Kids and a Rogue Gene Called FOP,” has been published in Mandarin. The book is about her son, Vincent’s, rare genetic disease, fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (popularly abbreviated FOP).
