Denim drive near the end
The Blue to Green Denim Drive is in its final days at Fresno State, seeking more new or used, stained, ripped or any color of denim that can be turned into insulation being used in Gulf Coast houses built to replace those lost to Hurricane Katrina. Collection barrels are in front of the University Student Union as Fresno State strives to move up from second to the top spot among the nation’s colleges in this effort, which ends Friday, Nov. 2. Canned-food drive part of next Bulldog football game
People who attend the Saturday, Nov. 3, Fresno State football game against Utah State will have another opportunity to help fight hunger in the region by donating canned food or making monetary contributions. The effort started with team physician Eric Hansen and received help from the Bulldog football team, management students, Sierra Pacific Orthopedic Center and the Community Food Bank, the principal beneficiary of the drive. It will be the second week in a row that the Bulldog Nation is asked to provide food at a football game, following the Oct. 26 effort to help victims of the Southern California wildfire disaster.
Literacy can be a lasting gift
Members of the Fresno State community are being asked to give the gift of literacy this holiday season. Throughout November, a fundraising drive will be mounted to purchase books for underprivileged children who participate in the S.M.I.L.E. Center program at Vinland Elementary School. The books will be given to the students so they can start their own library at home. Checks should be made payable to “First Book Fresno” and mailed to the Office of Civic Engagement and Service-Learning, M/S SB 120. Donations must be received by Dec. 1 for the holiday project. For more information, contact Renee Delport at rdelport@csufresno.edu.

Campus volunteers get plaudits for fire relief efforts
Chris Fiorentino (Community Engagement and Service-Learning) received public praise for helping Peak Broadcasting and KSEE, Channel 24, raise more than $55,000 and several truckloads of food and other nonperishable household items for Southern California fire victims. The two broadcast outlets conducted a daylong telethon in which Fiorentino participated. But most of the on-air praise was for about 80 people from Fresno State, many of them students, who helped in the effort. Said one volunteer coordinator, “We couldn’t have done it without them.” Fiorentino is reminding the campus community that the Red Cross and Community Food Bank, principal beneficiaries of the telethon, need support throughout the year for the work they do locally.
