Gender equity plan input sought by Dec. 4
Fresno State’s Gender Equity Plan Task Force is accepting comments and questions through Tuesday, Dec. 4, on its Web site, launched in November. President John D. Welty appointed the task force of 13 campus and community members to develop a new five-year gender equity plan that meets compliance requirements of the U.S. Office of Civil Rights. Responses to the most frequently asked questions will be posted on the Web site by Dec. 11. Public input should be directed through the Web site, www.csufresno.edu/taskforce, or via e-mail at taskforce@csufresno.edu.
College of Science and Mathmatics gets new dean
Fresno State’s new dean of the College of Science and Mathematics is Andrew Rogerson, who has been a biology professor and dean of the College of Science at Marshall University (West Virginia). Rogerson will take his new position next year. Throughout his 28-year academic career, Rogerson has been involved in research and teaching within such biological disciplines as ecology, taxonomy, physiology, and cell and molecular biology.
Cultural Heritage Institute seeks Diversity Awareness Week input
Faculty, staff and student input is sought by the Central Valley Cultural Heritage Institute in planning Diversity Awareness Week (April 7-12) around the theme “Cultivating Community.” The institute wants suggestions about events, activities, celebrations and commemorations on campus and in the community during the week. Planning meetings are held at 3 p.m. Wednesdays in The Center (University Center West), which houses the institute and the Women’s Resource Center. Arne Nixon Center celebrates 10th anniversary
The 10th anniversary of the founding of the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature will be marked with a celebration at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, on the fourth floor of the Henry Madden Library. Speaking at the event will be Michael Cart, an author, librarian and columnist who is past president of the Friends of Freddy (the Pig). The celebration is free. Research documents students’ addiction to communications technologies
Talking on cell phones, text messaging and participating in social networking sites such as MySpace.com can be addictive for teens and college students, according to a study by Tamyra Pierce (Mass Communication and Journalism). Pierce’s research found that about half of high school and college students she surveyed spend one to four hours daily on cell phones, while 39 percent of college students and 53 percent of high schoolers spend that much time daily on social networking sites. CSU commits to voluntary system of accountability measures
The California State University has committed to providing data on student learning, student engagement and enrollment and graduation as part of a national initiative called the Voluntary System of Accountability. Campus welcomes grape growers to technology, sustainability meeting
Central San Joaquin Valley grape growers will learn about the latest technologies and sustainable vineyard practices to improve quality and profitability at a workshop Friday, Dec. 7. The event is hosted by Fresno State’s Viticulture and Enology Research Center with the Central California Winegrowers Association and the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance. Wellness Challenge returns Feb. 14
The second annual Wellness Challenge will begin Feb, 14. It will be a 10-week effort to help students bring physical and psychological balance to their lives. The campus Floral Lab, on Barstow Avenue just east of Chestnut Avenue, has created a Web site to make it easier to shop for floral needs of weddings, holidays, parties and other occasions.
