Police training exercise scheduled at dorms Jan. 11
The University Police Department will join the Clovis and Fresno police departments from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, in a training exercise on campus, focusing on the University Courtyard student housing area. The session is part of the UPD’s preparedness effort to ensure the security and protection of the campus. To make the active-shooter scenario as realistic as possible, UPD is seeking volunteers to be role players during the training session. E-mail and Web service shutdowns scheduled Jan. 8 and 10
ITS staff has scheduled service interruptions for maintenance of faculty/staff e-mail and Web services from 5 to 11 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, and Thursday, Jan. 10. Wellness Challenge 2008 registration through Feb. 14
The second annual Wellness Challenge begins Feb. 14 and students are encouraged to participate in activities designed to promote the overall health of the campus community through April 24. This year’s challenge, which invites staff and faculty to challenge themselves in physical, occupational, social, spiritual, emotional and intellectual wellness, invites all departments and organizations to submit events for a calendar. 35th Chican@ Youth Conference on campus Jan. 12
‘Educate Your Thinking” is the theme of the 35th annual Chican@ Youth Conference to be held on campus Saturday, Jan. 12, beginning with registration at 8 a.m. at the Satellite Student Union. Workshops and activities will continue throughout campus until 6 p.m. The free event for high school students is hosted by the student organization, El Movimiento Estudiantil Chican@ de Aztlán, and by University Outreach Services and the Chicano Latin American Studies Department. ‘Wicked’ starts Book Club spring program

Page Stegner speaks to Friends of Madden Library
Award-winning novelist and essayist Page Stegner will speak to the Friends of the Madden Library at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 25 in the Alice Peters Auditorium. Stegner’s topic is “Adios Amigos: Writing about the Environmental West” and is part of the Friends’ “Writers of Western America” yearlong theme. A reception at 6 p.m. precedes Stegner’s presentation. Scholarships, fellowships available for international study
Faculty are asked to encourage students to apply for National Security Education Program David L. Boren Scholarship and Fellowship competitions for study abroad, language study and international research in 2008-09. The $20,000 or $30,000 awards help undergraduate and graduate American students learn about regions critical to U.S. interests, including Africa, Asia, central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East. Laval Award deadline is Feb. 8
Feb. 8 is the deadline to apply for the Claude C. Laval Jr. Award for Innovative Technology and Research, open to faculty, fulltime undergraduate and graduate students with faculty sponsorship. Snowfest 2008 gathering prizes to enhance family day in the snow
Donations of everything from restaurant gift certificates and popular sports paraphernalia to hotel stays and wine are being gathered for Snowfest 2008 drawings as additional enticement for a day of fun in the snow on Feb. 9 for Fresno State employees and their families. Staff Assembly organizers are seeking donations of at least 100 prizes that can be won by those from the campus community who travel to Sierra Summit Ski Resort, an hour and a half east of Clovis near Huntington Lake. There is a nominal charge of $1 per person for snacks and hot chocolate. Participants are invited to bring their own food and can ski or snowboard at Sierra Summit for an additional fee. The annual Central California Research Symposium is an opportunity to share recent research with community investigators in various fields, college students and faculty as well as to encourage research activities in the region. March 1 deadline for Cooke Foundation graduate scholarships
The deadline is March 1 for faculty nominations of senior students for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Graduate Scholarship Program, which is one of the largest and most competitive scholarship programs in the country. Fresno State can nominate up to two students for the scholarships as much as $50,000 per year for six years of tuition, fees and living expenses.
