Maddy Institute produces State of State analysis
The Maddy Institute will produce a roundtable discussion about regional impact of Gov. Schwarzenegger’s State of the State proposals that will air after the 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, speech on KSEE-24.2 (digital) and KSEE24.com. Don Jackson, chair of the Maddy Institute Board, will host and Thomas Holyoke (Political Science) will be on the panel dissecting the speech.
Durham’s mythic ‘Acacia’ wins national acclaim
David Anthony Durham (English) won Best of 2007 acclaim from Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly and Fantasy Magazine for his fourth novel, “Acacia,” published by Doubleday in June. The book is the first installment of a projected series about a mythic dynasty under attack from people it victimized. Click here for details.
Welty wins American Humanics recognition
University President John Welty is one of 60 people nationwide honored by the American Humanics Management and Leadership Institute for his commitment to helping prepare the next generation of nonprofit sector leaders. Fresno State is part of the American Humanics alliance of colleges, universities and nonprofits whose mission is to educate, prepare and certify professionals to lead nonprofit organizations. 2006 Fresno State olive oil wins silver award in San Diego
Fresno State’s 2006 Extra Virgin Olive Oil, produced from olives grown by students on the campus farm, won a silver award from the California Olive Oil Council at the San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival, an international showcase of food and beverage. It’s the third award for Fresno State olive oil in the two years it has been bottled. Click here for details.
Sustainability effort gets new emphasis in reorganization
To place additional focus on Fresno State’s efforts to be a role model in sustainable practices, the Department of Risk Management and Sustainability has been created and will be led by Assistant Vice President David Moll. The reorganization announced by Vice President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer Cynthia Teniente-Matson will expand David Huerta’s responsibilities to director of public safety and chief of police. Library’s design wins award for Native American influences
The Long Beach/South Bay chapter of the American Institute of Architects has honored AC Martin Partners of Los Angeles for its architectural design of the Henry Madden Library expansion and renovation. The Devine Detail Award praised the incorporation of design elements that reflect the region’s Native American heritage. Click here for details.
Health Policy Institute report advocates public involvement on air quality
Fresno State’s Central Valley Health Policy Institute released a report on air quality that detailed the need for greater citizen education and involvement on the issue. The report, “The Long Road to Clean Air in the San Joaquin Valley: Facing the Challenge of Public Engagement,” was authored by senior scientist David Lighthall and John Capitman. Sydney Jackson appointed to direct governmental relations
Sydney P. Jackson is the new interim director of governmental relations at Fresno State, charged with coordinating the university’s advocacy efforts and work with local, state and federal legislative offices regarding educational initiatives. Prop. 92 information available online
Proposition 92, the Community College Initiative, will go before voters Feb. 5 during the presidential primary. While the California State University supports the role of California’s community colleges in education, Prop. 92’s passage could have a negative impact on the CSU and threaten funding for other critical programs. The CSU encourages all voters to learn about Prop. 92 as they prepare to participate in the election. Click here for details.
Sims chosen director of sponsored programs
Nancy Myers Sims was appointed director of sponsored programs in a restructuring of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. Sims came to Fresno State in 1997 and has worked on grant development in the Colleges of Science and Mathematics, Agricultural Sciences and Technology and Social Sciences. Click here for details.
Calderon-Urrea wins CSU honor
Alejandro Calderon-Urrea (Biology) has been selected as the 2008 Andreoli Biotechnology Service Award winner, which honors faculty who have made outstanding contributions to the development of biotechnology in the California State University. The award will be presented at the 20th annual CSU Biotechnology Symposium on Saturday, Jan. 12 in Oakland.
Maddy Institute joins with KVPR on community radio show
The Maddy Institute has expanded its public policy outreach by joining with Fresno NPR affiliate KVPR, FM 89.3, to co-sponsor a series of special reports on "Quality of Life," a local news and public affairs program that airs at 9 a.m. Tuesdays. The first show Maddy show in December featured Valley legislators and faculty David Schecter and Thomas Holyoke (Political Science). Four shows (March 4, June 3, Sept. 2 and Dec. 2) will focus on the California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley and other collaborations between with KVPR are planned, said institute executive director Mark Keppler.
Wine tasting begins at Farm Market
Wine tastings are being conducted for customers at the Fresno State Farm Market, supplementing the student-run market’s sale of university-produced foods and wine. Previously, the university was licensed to provide tastings only at the Fresno State Winery. The first tastings were conducted by enology and viticulture students just before the Winter Break. Fresno State wines are available at the Farm Market at a discount for staff and faculty members, students (over 21) and alumni. Click here for details.
