Campus participation encouraged for Red Cross drive
President John Welty is encouraging faculty and staff participation in the American Red Cross donation drive 5 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at Peak Broadcasting, just west of Palm on Shaw Avenue. Volunteers will be working to help the Fresno-Madera chapter of the Red Cross, which last year provided 52,000 families emergency assistance. Services to the Community Expo set Jan. 23
Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to participate in the Services to the Community Expo on Jan. 23, at which nonprofit organizations will explain their opportunities for community service. The Jan and Bud Richter Center for Civic Engagement and Service-Learning organizes the event to help guide the campus community in the university’s goal to provide 1 million community service hours each year. Jendian wins Temple Beth Israel Social Action Award
Matthew Jendian (Sociology) will be honored Jan. 25 at Temple Beth Israel’s 19th annual Social Action Award Banquet. Jendian is founding director of Fresno State’s American Humanics Program, which provides students with experience and training with community organizations. Jendian is being recognized by the Valley’s largest Jewish congregation for his work in social justice, including advocacy of affordable housing. Marketing effort provides gift of literacy for children
Students and faculty member from the Marketing Department in the Craig School of Business helped promote literacy by collecting more than 40,000 books for the Central Valley Book Bank. The bank, which provides books for economically disadvantaged children, is the work of Charles “Skip” Sherwood (Marketing, Emeritus). Faculty participating in this year’s effort are Alan Canton, Lydia Anderson, Reza Motameni, Barbara Morgan, Dennis Schneider, Christian Ueland, Guy Decatrel and Jim Chipps.
Denim collection on campus helps insulate 24 houses
More than 12,000 denim pieces were collected during a month-long campaign on campus to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. The drive, led by USU Productions for a second year, received enough denim to insulate 24 houses and tops nationwide for the “Cotton: From Blue to Green” denim collection effort. First Book Holiday Gift Project successful
Members of the Fresno State community donated enough money to provide 226 books for children through the S.M.I.L.E. Center, an after-school enrichment program at Vinland Elementary School in Fresno. The donation enhances the First Book Holiday Gift Project, which gives children books to start their own home library.
