African Peoples History Month in Cineculture focus
February Cineculture screenings will be devoted to African Peoples’ History Month, beginning at 5:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, in McLane 121 with a presentation of Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing.” Other films this month are “The Story of a Displaced Child” (Feb. 9), “Wrapped in Pride: The Story of Kente in America” (Feb. 15), “Talk to Me” (Feb. 22) and a selection of eight videos from the Image Contre Nature 2007 section of the International Experimental Film Festival in France (Feb. 29). Fresno State dance duet will perform in concert
Fresno State student Nicole Askren and Kenneth Balint (Theatre Arts) will be guest performers at the "The Journey In The Struggle" dance concert of Altered Modalities. The evening of contemporary dance begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in downtown Fresno. Click here for details.

American Gypsy Contreras plays Feb. 2
Violinist Patrick Contreras will perform in concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, in the Satellite Student Union in a benefit for the Bulldog Pride Scholarship Fund. Contrearas bills himself as “An American Gypsy.” Joining him for the concert, which precedes his European tour, will be 40 Watt Hype and Enrique Abdala Toral Tickets ($20 advance, $25 at the door) can be ordered online at www.bulldogpride.org. Portable Dance Troupe offers variety of styles beginning Feb. 8
The university’s premiere dance event begins Feb. 8 when this year’s Portable Dance Troupe performance run begins “Dances on the Edge” in the John Wright Theatre. For more than 25 years Portable Dance Troup has showcased the choreography and dancing talents of students and faculty in a series of performances. This year, performances begin at 8 p.m. Feb. 8, 9 and 12-16 and at 2 p.m. Feb. 10. Click here for details.

Faculty use their talent to benefit music-student scholarships
Music faculty play in concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9 in the Concert Hall in “A Tapestry of Sound,” with proceeds going to student music scholarships. Highlights include an original composition by Brad Hufft and a piano piece by avant-garde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen (photo, right), played by Andreas Werz. Fresno State's February musical calendar is busy
February's music calendar includes a chamber performance, a junior high repertoire, a saxophone quartet and more. One highlight is “Musique de Chambre Carnaval” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 11, which will bring together for the first time the Clendenin Brass Quintet, the President’s Quintet (woodwinds), the Common Ground Saxophone Quartet and the Fresno State String Quartet. ‘Vagina Monologues’ promotes awareness of violence against women
The 10th anniversary of V-Day at Fresno State will include performances of “The Vagina Monologues” at 7 p.m. Feb. 10 and 11 in the Satellite Student Union. The production will be directed by J. Daniel Herring (Theatre Arts) as part of the global V-Day effort to call raise awareness of violence against women and girls. Proceeds will benefit Fresno State’s Violence Prevention Project, the Marjaree Mason Center, Centro La Familia and United Hmong Women and Men Against Violence. Ingrid Fliter performs next in Keyboard Concert series
Works by Schubert, Beethoven and Chopin will be performed by award-winning Argentine pianist Ingrid Fliter  at 8 p.m. Feb. 13 in the Concert Hall under the auspices of the Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concert series. Fliter has concertized throughout the world and received the prestigious 2006 Gilmore Artist Award. Click here for details.

Australian chorale will perform on campus
The Australian Voices, an innovative choir under composer and conductor Stephen Leek, will perform at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Department of Music’s convocation. The group performs contemporary Australian choral music. Click here for details

Armenian group takes Satellite Student Union stage
The Shoghaken Armenian Folk Ensemble will perform at 8 p.m. Feb. 26, in the Satellite Student Union under sponsorship of the Armenian Studies Program. The ensemble, which is on a nationwide tour, plays traditional Armenian instruments and performs Armenian folk and ashoughagan (troubadour) music. Fresno State participation sought at art evening in Visalia
Fresno State faculty and student artists, poets and musicians are invited to participate in the College of the Sequoias Puente Club’s "Noche de Artistas" the evening of March 28 at the COS Theater in Visalia.  Prospective participants are asked to e-mail Dave Hurst at davidh@cos.edu.

CSU Summer Arts catalog is available
The CSU Summer Arts program will offer 17 courses, 16 of them at Fresno State and the other in Florence, Italy, for 2008. Theater, creative writing, visual arts, music, film and video and dance are among the topics of this year’s courses, all of which are described in the CSU Summer Arts catalog. Courses are intensive, two-week (June 29-July 12 and July 13-26) explorations that give students of varied abilities exposure to experts in each field and an opportunity for public exhibition of what they learn.
