African Peoples History Month begins Feb. 1 on campus
The 2008 African Peoples History Month calendar will be available at noon Friday, Feb. 1, at the Free Speech Platform during opening ceremonies for African Peoples History Month. African Peoples History Month is coordinated by the student groups African Peoples History Month Committee and Black Students United with support from the Associated Students Inc., Africana and American Indian Studies, Black Faculty and Staff Association and the Central Valley Cultural Heritage Institute. Maddy Institute reviews ballot measures on KSEE-24
Ballot propositions to be decided in the Feb. 5 election will be in the spotlight at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 (replay at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3) in the next collaboration between the university’s Maddy Institute and KSEE-24, Fresno’s NBC affiliate. The measures at issue would guarantee state money to community colleges (Proposition 92), change term limits for legislators (93) and ratify agreements with four Native American groups to expand casinos (94-97).
Wellness@Work earns statewide recognition
The campus Wellness@Work program won a California Fit Business Bronze Award for its efforts to promote a healthy workplace. The California Fit Business Award program is a partnership of the California Task Force on Youth and Workplace Wellness and the state Department of Health Services’ 5 a Day – Be Active Worksite Program. New lecture series focuses on cross-cultural awareness
DeAnna Reese (History) launches the Cross Cultural Lecture Series at 6 p.m. Feb. 14 in University Center 202 with a discussion of “Leadership of African American Women.” The series is coordinated by the Central Valley Cultural Heritage Institute to acquaint the campus and community with work that faculty are doing around culture, heritage, and diversity. Lectures will be the second and fourth Thursday of each month. DeVendra Sharma (Communication) will speak Feb. 28 about “How We Use Communication for Social Change.” Click here for details.
Obesity Prevention Program opens office near campus
The Central California Regional Obesity Prevention Program has opened its office at 1625 E. Shaw Ave, Suite 106, just west of the campus, to house the regional initiative to create environments supporting healthy eating and active living. The program involves a unique a partnership among Fresno State, county public health departments, community-based organizations and obesity councils. The program is administered by the Central California Center for Health and Human Services and is housed under the College of Health and Human Services. Click here for details.
Alumni scholarship endowment benefits from $100,000 bequest
The estate of business alumnus William N. Beck has conveyed a $100,000 bequest to the Bulldog Pride Scholarship Fund, operated through the Fresno State Alumni Association Scholarship Endowment. It’s the biggest such gift to any alumni association scholarship endowment in the 23-campus California State University, said Peter Robertson (Annual Giving/Development), the Bulldog Pride Scholarship Fund founder. Three from campus on ‘40 Under 40’ honors list
Leticia Reyna Cano (Development), Caty Perez (Craig School of Business) and Jessup Wiley (Fresno State Winery) were on Buisiness Street Online’s “40 Under 40” list of local business professionals and civic leaders younger than 40. Exercise workout program series begins
Twenty-minute strength (Friday), cardio (Tuesday) and bootcamp (Thursday) circuit workouts for faculty and staff are available at no charge as part of the Wellness@Work program. The sessions are conducted by Melanie Goldberg (Wellness@Work), a licensed personal trainer. Click here for details.

The College of Health and Human Services has begun circulating Spotlight, a newletter to connect faculty, staff, alumni and friends, alert them to upcoming events and feature information about new programs, personnel and reports. Student orientation leaders sought by Dog Days
Faculty and staff are encouraged to tell students that Dog Days is hiring orientation leaders for the summer program that begins in June and continues through July. Dog Days provides incoming students and their parents insights into the coming experiences on campus. Orientation leaders are paid and receive priority registration for the spring 2009 semester. Internship and Career Expo scheduled Feb. 28 at Save Mart Center
Scores of employers will participate in Internship & Career Expo 2008 from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Save Mart Center Concourse. The event, the second presented by Career Services, gives students an afternoon to connect with a wide variety of career working and internship opportunities. University Study Abroad Consortium offers 2009-10 opportunities
Full-time faculty who will return to Fresno State after their term abroad are eligible to participate in University Study Abroad Consortium programs in summer and fall 2009 and spring 2010. Assignments are available in Chile, China, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Ghana, India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico and Spain. The application deadline is Friday, Feb. 1. Federal budget is Maddy Institute focus March 6
The Maddy Institute – in conjunction with the Concord Coalition's "Fiscal Wake Up" Tour – will host a discussion of the federal budget on March 6. Scheduled to participate are David Walker, the comptroller general of the U.S., and Alice Rivlin, former director of the Office of Management and Budget under President Clinton.
