Fresno State faculty enhance CSU Summer Arts
Four Fresno State faculty are contributing to the 2008 CSU Summer Arts program on campus from June 29 to July 26. Responsible for designing courses and contacting guest artists to teach them are Ben Boone (Music), "Composer-Performer Collaboration"; Thomas Whit Ellis (Theatre Arts), "Gospel Singing and Conducting Made Easy"; and Corey Whitehead (Music), "Guitar/Music Composition: Flamenco Form, Analysis, and Technique." Poetry reading March 4 by Rick Campbell
Poet Rick Campbell will read from his new book, "Dixmont," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, in the Alice Peters Auditorium. Campbell is the director and editor of Anhinga Press, the company that publishes the annual winner of the Philip Levine Poetry Book Prize, coordinated through the Master of Fine Arts writing program. Campbell has published extensively and has won an NEA fellowship, Pushcart Prize and two fellowships from the Florida Arts Council. He teaches English at Florida A&M.

Armenian Film Festival, speakers planned in March
The Armenian Studies Program offers three programs this month, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, March 7, with the ninth annual Armenian Film Festival in the Grosse Industrial Technology Building, Room 101. On March 12, poet Gregory Djanikian will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the Alice Peters Auditorium and Kemal Yalcin will take the stage in the Peters Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. March 15 to discuss his novel, "You Rejoice My Heart." Cello, piano recital features faculty
Music faculty Hatem Nadim and new orchestra director Thomas Loewenheim collaborate in a duo cello and piano recital featuring works by Stravinsky, Shostakovich, and Grieg. "A New Cello in Town" will be performed at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 5, in the Concert Hall. Click here for details.

'Single Black Female, Looking É' has world premiere on campus
The next University Theatre production is the world premier of "Single Black Female, Looking É" by Jeannette Jackson-McNeil. Set in the Bay Area in the early 1970s, the musically driven story revolves around a character whose personal ad in a newspaper trying to find someone to marry attracts an assortment of candidates. Thomas-Witt Ellis (Theatre Arts) directs. The Fresno State production begins March 7. Showtime is 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, March 7-8, and March 11-15, and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 10. High school bands visit campus
The ninth annual High School Concert Band Invitational will welcome 15 ensembles to Fresno State on Friday, March 7, for performances and commentary by band directors from around the nation. Both the Fresno State Symphonic Band and the Wind Orchestra also will perform. The day-long event will be in the concert hall. Click here for details.

Intercollegiate Wind Band Festival on March 8 and 9
The 29th annual Intercollegiate Wind Band Festival on Saturday, March 8, and Sunday, March 9, will bring together symphonic bands and wind ensembles from California and beyond to perform and receive receiving comments and advice from a panel of experts. Each day will conclude with a concert performance at which tickets for faculty, staff, seniors and students will cost $5. Click here for details.

Poet Komunyakaa will speak on campus
Yusef Komunyakaa, a professor and Distinguished Senior Poet at New York University and former chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, will speak at Fresno State on March 13 as part of the University Lecture Series. The program is at 7:30 p.m. in the Satellite Student Union. Faculty, staff, Alumni Association members and seniors may purchase advance tickets at the University Student Union Information Desk for $6 or pay $8 at the door. Click here for details.

Swiss ensemble plays March 15
The Guernica Ensemble from Switzerland will perform works by Balz Truempy and Stefano Tagletti as guest artists in the Orpheus concert series. The free concert at 8 p.m. March 15 will be performed in the Concert Hall. For information, call 277.8784.

Orpheus will perform chamber opera

Festival welcomes flute players of all ages
The 16th annual Central California Flute Festival will attract flute players of all ages and abilities to the campus for concerts, rehearsals and exhibits in the Music building all day March 29. A recital at 4:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall will conclude the event. Click here for details.

Cineculture films salute Women's Herstory month
The Cineculture Club begins the month at 5:15 p.m. Friday, March 7, with films that celebrate Women's Herstory Month - "Charisse Shumate: Fighting for our Lives" and "Our Voices Within: Out of the Shadows." The March 28 Cineculture program celebrates the work of farm labor leaders César Chávez and Dolores Huerta with short documentaries about immigration raids in New Haven, Conn., and San Diego.
