Campus budget forum planned March 13
A forum for the campus community on the state budget crisis will be convened at 11 a.m. March 13 at the Satellite Student Union. President Welty, the Joint Labor Council, Academic Senate, Staff Assembly and Associated Students Inc. are sponsoring the forum to inform participants about the crisis and how they can let legislators know their concerns. Speeches will be followed by a question-answer session.

Campus ceremony marks 5th anniversary of shuttle tragedy
Air Force ROTC members, who are engineering students. presented a wreath at the Engineering East Building marking the fifth anniversary of the shuttle Columbia's re-entry accident that claimed the lives of alumnus Col. Rick Husband his six other astronauts. Chris Rosander, a mechanical engineering alumnus who works for Rep. Jim Costa, D-Fresno, spoke about his experiences as a scientist working on America's space program. Click here for details.

Welty, Smits are special guests at NASA Columbia ceremony
President Welty and Vice President Peter Smits (Advancement) were among those at Cape Canaveral, Fla., for NASA's memorial ceremony for alumnus Col. Rick Husband the his space shuttle Columbia crewmates who perished five years ago. The two and the university's own memorial that day were mentioned during the event by Col. Husband's widow, Evelyn Husband-Thompson, who had invited them. Click here for details.

Hispanic Outlook rates Fresno State among top 100
The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education named Fresno State one of the top 100 schools where Hispanic students can "thrive and persist." In the 2006-07 academic year, 860 Hispanic students at Fresno State earned bachelor's degrees and 163 earned master's degrees. "Fresno State is proud of its record of service to Latino students and is proud to host one of the largest Latino Commencement Celebrations in the country," said Provost Jeri Echeverria. Matching gifts facts reiterated
Vice President for Advancement Peter Smits issued a statement to inform the campus community and friends of the university about misleading statements made in a Fresno Bee article Feb. 16 about matching gifts in athletics at Fresno State. To read the statement, click here.
