Chilean film 'Machuca' concludes Cineculture season
Chilean director
Andrés Wood’s 2004 film, "Machuca," will close the spring season of Cineculture Club screenings at 5:15 p.m. Friday, May 2, in McLane Hall, Room 121. The film is set in Santiago just before the Allende government was toppled by Pinochet forces. It tells the story of a friendship among an 11-year-old well-off boy who meets a poor boy and a spirited girl from the boy's shantytown. Cineculture presentations are free and usually include a post-screening discussion.
Mexican youth perform in campus-co-sponsored concert
The College of Arts and Humanities and Department of Music are collaborating with the Mexico Consulate in Fresno and the Fresno Youth Philharmonic to present the Cedros-Universidad Panamerica Youth and Children Symphony in concert. The Fresno Youth Philharmonic is directed by Thomas Loewenheim (Music). The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 2, in the recently refurbished Rotary Amphitheater at Woodward Park in Fresno. Free tickets are available in the Music Building, Room 186. Musical satire is light-hearted and pointed
"Urinetown: The Musical," a Tony Award-winning musical satire, debuts at 8 p.m. Friday, May 2, in the John Wright Theatre of the Speech Arts Building. The production is about a greedy corporation that controls the water and public toilets in a town made desperate by a 20-year drought. Brad Myers (Theater Arts) directs, Royce Matthews was the choreographer and Scott Hancock leads a live orchestra. Performances will be at 8 p.m. May 2-3 and 6-10. A 2 p.m. matinee is scheduled Sunday, May 4. Tickets are $15 for staff and faculty.

Community Chorus spring performance is May 3
The Fresno Community Chorus will perform its spring concert, "Cries, Sighs and Prayers," at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 3, in the Music Building Concert Hall. Anna Hamre (Music) will direct the Chorus Coro in Stravinsky's spiritual "Mass" and the Master Chorale in the lively Brahms "Liebeslieder Waltzer." Italian pianist Andaloro closes Keyboard Concerts season
Pianist Giuseppe Andaloro, whose competition success in his native Italy and in Lond have led to worldwide success as a soloist, will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 4, in the Concert Hall to conclude the Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concerts season. Dr. Phillip Walker remembered in celebration
A celebration of the life of Phillip Walker (Theater Arts, Emeritus) will be celebrated by the Department of Theatre Arts at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 4, at the Dennis and Cheryl Woods Theatre. Dr. Walker joined the Fresno State faculty in 1950 and retired in 1990, following a career that launched many other careers in performance and teaching. Dr. Walker also was a well-known actor in community theater. He died March 31 at the age of 86. Dr. Walker's memorial celebration is free and open to the community. Campus concert turns back the calendar to 1908
The Fresno State Opera Workshop and Symphonic Band march 100 years backward for a joint performance, "Turn back the clock: Fresno, 1908," at 7 p.m. Monday, May 5, in the Concert Hall of the Music Building. The evening will re-create a band concert and theatrical review in Fresno's Barton Opera House, circa 1908. Audience members are encouraged to dress in their early 20th century finery. Fresno State Symphony concludes its year
In its final concert of the academic year, the Fresno State Symphony Orchestra will feature the concerto competition winner. Thomas Loewenheim (Music) conducts. The concert, begins at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, in the Concert Hall. Admission is $5 for faculty and staff.
Kybele Dance Theater performs May 11
Associated Students Inc. and the Fresno State Tap Tones are sponsors the Kybele Dance Theater of Los Angeles' performance at 7 p.m. May 11 in the Satellite Student Union. Kybele Dance Theater is a contemporary troupe that uses elements of theatrical, modern and ethnic dance forms, often enhanced with such props as fans, scarves and folding chairs.
Fresno State music season ends with Orpheus look back
The final concert of Fresno State's concert season will be a nostalgic look back to Orpheus' first season in 1978, presenting compositions by Ravel and Wagner performed then. CSU Summer Arts sets dozens of public events
The California State University Summer Arts program at Fresno State will bring the community more than three dozen public cultural events in June and July, featuring the artists who teach two-week master classes in a range of artistic disciplines. All but two will be on campus and 17 of them are free - culminations in which the students get a chance to present their newly acquired skills in public. Kicking off the CSU Summer Arts schedule on June 29 will be New York's physically and emotionally energetic contemporary dance company, Urban Bush Women.
