Kenneth Balint
(Theatre Arts) and student Nicole Askren were awarded Audience Choice and Producers awards for their performance of "Friction Brings Fatigue" during the moving Arts Dance Performance Arts Festival in San Francisco. Balint and Askrew danced "Friction" earlier this year during the Portable Dance Theatre concert series on campu. Art available.

Jennifer Burgess
(Development) is a national team leader for Friends of Heroes, whose principal mission is raising money toward pediatric blood cancer research and patient services through Light the Night walks (one is scheduled on campus Oct. 18). Burgess' team has raised $958,000 over several years - $113,000 in the past year. That qualified the team for a cancer research grant named for a person of the team's choosing and bestowed by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Click here for details.

Betty Garcia
(Social Work Education) has published “Diversity Education for social justice: Mastering teaching skills” (2nd edition) and “Theory and social work practice with immigrant populations” (a chapter in “Next Stop-USA” by Springer Press). In June, she completes three years chairing the National Association of Social Workers’ National Committee on Racial and Ethnic Diversity and as the California representative to the association’s national board of directors. She was appointed to the Affilia, Women in Social Work Journal, corporate board; the Council on Social Work Education Commission on Professional Development; and as chair of the cultural competence track for the annual program meeting.

Lisa Herzig, Deborah Russell and Klaus Tenbergen
(Food Science and Nutrition) organized a public presentation by dietetic program students linking gaps between nutrition and cooking. The lecture was at a meeting on campus of the ACF Chef's Association of the San Joaquin Valley and the Central Valley Dietetic Association. The topic was "Culinary Bites, a Dietitian's Delight: Food for Life."

Helene Joseph-Weil and Benjamin Boone
(Music) were featured on National Public Radio for the cantata they wrote, "Ascension," which had its premiere on campus. The work is based on more than 10 years of research into Ascencion Solorsano, the last member of a Native American tribe near Gilroy. Click here for details.

George B. Kauffman
(Chemistry, Emeritus) published "Chemical Compound: Coordination Compound," "Coordination Number" and "Hydrate," Encyclopedia Britannica Online (March 20); "Aaron B. Lerner (1920-2007), the Dermatologist Who Discovered Melatonin" and "Antoine Henri Becquerel (1852-1908), Discoverer of Natural Radioactivity: A Retrospective View on the Centenary of his Death" (both with Jean-Pierre Adloff), The Chemical Educator (April 1); "The role of science," The Fresno Bee (April 3); and "Celluloid" (with James Fargo Balliett) and "William Francis Giauque (1895-1982)," both in "Research and Discovery: Landmarks and Pioneers in American Science," (M.E. Sharpe, $299).

Marlene Miyasaki
(Plant Science) was recognized with a Common Threads award at the annual presentation on campus. The Common Threads awards recognizes women for service in agriculture and the community and for their philanthropic activities.

Tamyra A. Pierce
(Mass Communication and Journalism) presented MySpace research at the National Broadcasting Society conference in Anaheim and was presented an honorable mention award for her work. Also presented research at the Broadcast Education Association conference in Las Vegas and at the Fresno Unified School District, where she will make presentations to parents, teachers and administrators over the next several months.

Joan Sharma
(Art and Design) is a member of a collective exhibiting at the Infusion Gallery in downtown Los Angeles through May 25. An opening reception is scheduled May 8. The gallery is at 719 S. Spring St. Click here for details.

(Institute for Family Business) will speak at the Sunrise Summit at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, at the Lamp Liter Inn in Visalia about "Families in Business and Business in Families. The event is sponsored by the Visalia Chamber of Commerce.

John Welty
(President) was invited to participate in the Higher Education Summit for Global Development at the Department of State in Washington, D.C. The summit aimed to strengthen the role of higher education in social and economic development worldwide, highlighting innovative ways to build educational capacity, expand research and encourage the exchange and application of technology.
