‘Stop the Hate’ week begins
“Stop the Hate Week, Stop the Violence - Building a Culture of Peace” will observed Oct. 1-4 with speakers, a film, candlelight vigil, music and a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. The week’s activities will conclude Oct. 4 with activities from 10 a.m. to noon at the Free Speech area. There will be music, an exhibition, “From Culture of Violence to a Culture of Peace – Transforming the Human Spirit,” and the traditional garlanding of the Gandhi statue in the Peace Garden. James RandiJames Randi is lecture series leadoff speaker
Retired professional magician James Randi and his presentation on “Pseudo-Technology in the New Millennium” will lead off the 2008-09 University Lecture Series at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2 at the Satellite Student Union at California State University, Fresno. Randi is the author of numerous books on the paranormal and so-called “psychic” phenomena, he compares modern misinformation on science and technology to age-old cons that have been repackaged for the new millennium. Town hall on water issues held Oct. 2
The campus will host “California’s Water: A Town Hall Meeting” at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2 in the Leon S. and Pete P. Peters Educational Center, within the Student Recreation Center. Huell Howser, a host for public television’s “California’s Water” and “California’s Gold,” will emcee the event, which will focus on the drought, water conservation, water shortages, the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, agriculture and endangered species. The event is sponsored by Fresno State, the Association of California Water Agencies, California Latino Water Coalition, Friant Water Authority and Kern County Water Agency. Theatre Arts presents panel discussion
On Monday, Oct. 6, from 11 a.m. to noon, the Department of Theatre Arts will present a panel discssion based on the political issues raised by William Sasroyan's play "Slaughter of the Innocents," performed in the JW Theater from Oct. 3-11. Panelists for the discussion will include Scott Moore, Bruce Thornton, and George Diestel. The discussion is moderated by Edward EmanuEl.

International Coffee Hour features Portugal
David A. Ross, professor emeritus of French and Portuguese (Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures) will speak on Lisbon, Portugal, and the Portuguese World Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. in University Student Union, Room 312. The purpose of the International Coffee Hour is to expand people's knowledge about different countries and cultures and to create a friendly atmosphere to bring campus-wide and community dialogues with people from different backgrounds.

College of Social Sciences offers Lecture Series
The College of Social Sciences offers a Gender and History Lecture Series, beginning with Judy Yung: “Unbound Feet: A Slide Talk on the History of Chinese American Women,” on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 4 p.m. in McLane Hall, Rm. 161. Relaxed parking is available. The next lecture features Lillian Faderman: "How American Women Got the Vote, Got Educated, and Got into the Professions," on Oct. 15 at 4 p.m. in Peters Building, Rm. 191. Conley Art buildingConley Art Gallery exhibit to feature faculty work
The October Conley Art Gallery show will feature the work of artists from Fresno State Art and Design Department faculty. The exhibit runs Oct. 6-29 with a reception on Thursday, Oct. 9 from 5 to 8 p.m. At the reception, snacks, cheese, crackers, sodas and wine will be served. There is no admission charge. Accessibility Fair to demonstrate 'best practices'
During October, which is Disability Awareness Month, the campus will offer an Accessibility Fair sponsored by the Accessibility Technology Initiative and the Office of the Provost. The fair will focus on ways to share best practices and look at resources available on campus. Included in the fair are tips on how to make your PowerPoint accessible and how to get a video close captioned. The event will be held at UC 202 on Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All faculty and staff are encouraged to attend. The fair will feature demonstrations of hardware and software that ensure accessibility to the entire campus community. Fresno State faculty members will share their "best practices" and attendees are invited to bring their documents along with them on a flash drive for an accessibility check.

Conference focuses on regional economic transformation
The Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the Central Valley Fund, city of Clovis, dand Central Valley Business Incubator are sponsoring a conference 8:30 a.m.-3:45 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Rex Phebus Veterans Memorial Building in Clovis. Private equity-fund manager Bob Grady of the San Francisco-based Carlyle Group will discuss how private equity/venture capital can transform regional economies. Lt. Gov. John Garamendi, the luncheon speaker, will talk about the state's role in assisting with the region's economic recovery. Advance registration is $65 and seating is limited. Mass Communication and Journalism to hold scholarship reception
Faculty and staff are welcome to join the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism as it celebrates its past and future at the sixth Annual Scholarship Reception, Wednesday, Oct. 22 from 5-7 p.m. in the Vintage Room. The department will honor 2008-09 recipients as well as those professionals and educators who have had scholarships established in their name. Wicked Wellness Carnival promotes alcohol safety
The 2nd annual Wicked Wellness Carnival will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22 as part of National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week. This year’s theme is based on the Broadway play, Wicked. The event, hosted by the University Health and Psychological Services, will be held on Memorial Court, east of Memorial Fountain in front of the Kennel Bookstore. Rip SqueakRip Squeak® author to speak
Susan Yost-Filgate, author and co-creator of the Rip Squeak® picture book series, will be the featured speaker at the Arne Nixon Center Advocates annual meeting on Friday, Oct. 24 at the Smittcamp Alumni House. A reception will be held at 6 p.m., followed by the talk at 6:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited. The Rip Squeak® series was created by Susan Yost-Filgate and her husband, illustrator Leonard Filgate, in 1997. The Filgates moved to Fresno three years ago. Their picture books feature Rip Squeak, an adventurous mouse, his sister Jesse, and their friends, Abbey the kitten and Euripides the frog. MCJ holds Hall of Fame Fundraiser
Faculty and staff are invited to attend the inaugural Mass Communications and Journalism Alumni Hall of Fame Fundraiser. The event will be held Thursday, Oct. 30, from 6-8 p.m. at the Smittcamp Alumni House. It will honor Ray Steele Jr., who recently announced his retirement as president and publisher of the Fresno Bee. Steele has donated 20 new iMac computers for an MCJ computer lab at Fresno State. Steele, class of 1968, is the first alumni to be inducted into the MCJ Hall of Fame.

Marathon legend Switzer to talk at Fresno State Nov. 7
Marathon legend Kathrine Switzer will give a free public lecture presented by the Women's Studies Program on Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. in the Satellite Student Union. Switzer will be participating in the Eye-Q Two Cities Marathon in Fresno on November 9. The Two Cities Marathon has been added to the popular 7th annual Trail of 2 Cities Half Marathon. The marathon is a Boston qualifier, complete with prize money, finisher’s sweatshirt, hot breakfast and our signature ice cream sundae. Switzer is best known as the woman who challenged the all-male tradition of the Boston Marathon in 1967 and became the first woman to officially enter and run the event. Her entry created an uproar and worldwide notoriety when a race official tried to forcibly remove her from the competition.

Free hearing evaluations are available
The Speech and Hearing Clinic of the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Studies is offering free hearing evaluations to the campus community and the public. The evaluations are conducted at various times on most days during the week. The Audiology Clinic is located on campus in the Psychology and Human Services building. Farm MarketFarm Market opens booth on Tuesdays
Healthful snack alternatives are available at the new “Healthy Eating – Fresh from Our Farm” booth operated by the university’s Student Dietetic Association and Gibson Farm Market. The booth is near the Memorial Fountain at the east end of the Free Speech Area and is open 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. every Tuesday during the fall semester. For more, click here.
