Theatre season opens Sept. 30

The 2005-06 University Theatre season opens Sept. 30 with “Proof,” written by David Auburn and directed by Kathleen McKinley. It also runs Oct. 1-2 and 4-8, in the John Wright Theatre.

Critics describe this 2001 Pulitzer and Tony Awarding winning play as "complex, tender, and wonderfully funny!" 

 

Is brilliance madness or genius?  What legacy will be inherited by the troubled daughter of a famous mathematics professor?  Life, family, romance, mystery, and mathematics create a "compelling evening of theatre!"

Also this season are:

 

“The Misanthrope” by Moliére, directed by Terry Miller, Oct. 28-30 and Nov. 1-5, in the Arena Theatre.


Some say the truth hurts; some say it will set us free. In Moliére's “The Misanthrope,” the world's most truthful man falls in love with a beautiful woman who gossips, flirts and tells everyone what they want to hear. The comedy provokes plenty of laughs and also raises fascinating questions about the place of honesty and of lies, in society.

University Theatre says farewell to one of America's greatest playwrights, Arthur Miller, with a production of his award winning play. Set in post-World War II America the ghosts of 20 fighter pilots rise from their graves and point their fingers at the enemy. That enemy turns out to be a huge surprise.


Portable Dance Troupe, with Ruth Griffin and Kenneth Balint, artistic directors, will perform Feb. 17-19 and 21-25 in John Wright Theatre.

“The Diviners,” by Jim Leonard Jr., directed by Brad Myers, will run March 24-26 and 28-31 and April 1 in the Arena Theatre.

A small town torn apart by a tragic drowning and the devastating effect of the Great Depression struggles to find hope in this powerful, poignant and deeply humorous play.


The Gospel at Colonus” by Lee Beuer and Bob Telson, directed by Thomas-Whit Ellis will perform May 5-7 and 9-13, 2006 in the John Wright Theatre.


A re-imagining of Sophocles' tragedy Oedipus at Colonus into the language of gospel music. Staged as a revival, it erupts with live gospel music driving home the powerful themes of redemption and forgiveness.

All University Theatre performances begin at 8 p.m. except on Sundays when they begin at 2 p.m.
