Biosafety review committee formed Provost Jeri Echeverria announced the creation of a new review committee, the Institutional Biosafety Committee, or IBC. The National Institute of Health (NIH) requires that each university conducting research involving recombinant DNA establish a review board to certify that research processes are in accordance with national standards. Fresno State has established similar review boards for research certification on human and animal subjects. Those boards are chaired by Dr. Paul Crosbie (Biology) and Dr. Bob Levine (Psychology). Each IBC board is to be comprised of at least seven members, two of which should be community members. Committee members are: Dr. Jim Prince, chair; Dr. Alice Wright (biology), Dr. Jim Farrar (plant science), Dr. Mamta Rawat (biology) Nancy Sims (Research & Sponsored Programs), Lisa Kao (environmental safety), Fred Ryan (community member, USDA) and Jeff Single (community member, California Fish and Game). The IBC will meet on an as-needed basis to review research protocols for grant and research proposals. If you have questions regarding the work of this group, or have a research project that involves recombinant DNA, please contact the chair of the committee, Dr. Jim Prince, at jamespr@csufresno.edu or at ext. 8-2559.
