  Nagy Bengiamin (Electrical and Computer Engineering) spent the summer as a visiting researcher at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Laboratory. His primary responsibility was to develop mathematical modeling and system design methodologies for high temperature testing. The goal was to design an advanced chamber for testing aerospace applications materials under typical heating and cooling profiles experienced during flight. He expects many opportunities to pass on the knowledge he gained to students in his systems engineering classes.

Barbara Henkel is the new assistant director of development for the Craig School of Business.  She was previously a sales manager with the Piccadilly Inn Hotels. She will be working with the Business Associates and the Alumni & Friends for the Craig School of Business.
 

Benjamin Cuellar (Dean, College of Health and Human Services) received an outstanding leadership award at the Arte Américas Museum as part of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Sergio Aguilar-Gaxiola (Psychology) was among “Local Heroes of the Year” named by KVPT Channel 18 and Union Bank of California as part of the television station’s recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month in September. Profiles of the honorees will be broadcast on the station through Oct. 15 and are available on the station’s Web site.

José A. Díaz (Associate Dean, College of Arts and Humanities) is the first recipient of the Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra Endowed Principal Oboe Chair. The endowment was established through the generosity of Joseph F. Desmond in honor of the Honorable Edward J. and Anita M. Shanahan.  It was announced at the opening concert of the 2005-06 season. Díaz has occupied the principal oboe chair since 1984. 

Felicia Greer (Kinesiology) competed in the World Cycling Championship in Madrid, Spain in September. She was selected by the Canadian National Team and competed in the individual time trial and the road race.


Publications

Pam Lane-Garon (Literacy & Early Education) co-authored an article in Journal of Peace Education (Vol. 2, September 2005, pp. 183-193) entitled, “Mediators and mentors: Partners in conflict resolution and peace education.” She authored a chapter entitled, “Scientific flim-flam: A who's who of entrepreneurial research” in “Reading for Profit” (2005), edited by Bess Altwerger. Garan was honored at Faculty Convocation in August for her contributions to the field of literacy at state and national levels.

Laura Alamillo (Literacy & Early Education) co-authored the book review of “Stories matter: The complexity of NCTE Publication.”

Rosie Arenas (Literacy & Early Education) is serving as consultant on a series of books for Children's Environmental Publishing in San Francisco. The series, entitled “Heroes of the Environment,” is a series of non-fiction books for children about the environment. She Arenas will be authoring a companion book for each title to include instructional applications for teachers use.
