It is among the several programs sponsored by the International Student Services and Programs office to help international students to integrate into their new environment, and it enables the Fresno State community to have access to a great variety of cultures. The purpose off the International Coffee Hour is to expand people’s knowledge about different countries and cultures and to create a friendly atmosphere to bring campus-wide and community dialogues with people from different backgrounds. This type of activity offers the opportunity to develop global friendships, share cultures of international students with the community and to explore programs available to study, travel and work abroad. October programs include: Oct. 4 - “Discovering Unknown Russia: A comprehensive Guide to the Largest Country in the World.” Antonina Trachuk, a gradate Fulbright student majoring in mass communications and journalism, will talk about the rich culture of two continents, historical sites and cities, trans-Siberian railroad and other popular destinations and attractions of her homeland. Oct. 11 - “Greece: The Essence and Importance of Ancient Greek Accounts of the Good Life.” Dr. Mariana Anagnostopoulos, lecturer in the Philosophy Department, will present an overview of core tenets of the ethical views of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, and discuss their continuing relevance. Oct. 18 - “From Ireland to the United States: An International Life Journey.” Dr. Alan Rufus Waters, professor of international business, will talk about the excitement of international life based on his personal experience as a traveler of the world, and specifically address Europe, Africa and the United States. Oct. 25 - “Ecuador: Culture, Traditions and Destinations.” Juan Pablo Moncayo, a senior physics major, will present Ecuador’s unique culture – rich in tradition and arts as a result of the pre-Colombian tribal communities – the Inca civilization and the strong influence of the Spanish empire. Sponsors for the coffee hour are the International Student Services and Programs, USU Diversity Grant Awareness program and the Division of Student Affairs.
