chemist named Fresno State’s Top Dog |

Richard
Houghten, founder and president of a medical research
institute, received
California State University, Fresno’s Distinguished Alumnus Award at the
sold-out Top Dog Alumni Awards Gala on Oct. 13. The
Distinguished Alumnus Award is the highest honor given
by the Fresno State Alumni Association. About 500 were
expected to attend the Top Dog event in the
Save
Mart Center. The Arthur Safstrom Service
Award will be presented to Bud and Jan Richter, longtime
supporters of the university. The Safstrom award honors
those who have contributed extraordinary service to the
university or the alumni association.

Maddy Institute to provide ballot
analysis
With Election
Day approaching, two members of the board of directors of the Maddy
Institute at California State University, Fresno, will discuss the upcoming
California ballot propositions on the local television stations. Don
Jackson, a Fresno lawyer and close political adviser to the late Sen. Ken
Maddy, and Diana Dooley, general counsel and vice president of Children's
Hospital Central California, will be discussing Propositions 73 through 80
on the November ballot. The Maddy Institute also was involved with a
televised debate between Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lt. Governor
Cruz Bustamante on Oct. 28.

Alcohol Awareness event
draws big crowd
OctoberFiesta!, one of the events during Alcohol Awareness
Week in October, drew hundreds of students, faculty and
staff to view performances by the Salsa Club, conga drum
players, a mariachi band, folkloric dancers and a DJ. The
week’s were sponsored by the Alcohol Advisory Council in
cooperation with a variety of campus programs and
organizations. |

Fresno State hosts USDA liaison officer
California State University, Fresno has been chosen to host the USDA-HSINP
(Agricultural) Liaison Officer for Northern California, Oregon and
Washington in collaboration with the Office of the Provost and Vice
President for Academic Affairs.The USDA and Fresno State have entered into
one of only five such cooperative agreements in the nation. Their role will
be to raise the awareness of USDA programs in the region and to provide
services to students in the form of scholarships, internships and federal
employment opportunities with prospective USDA employees, and assisting
faculty and staff with available fellowships and federal grant opportunities
for the institution.

International Coffee Hour series
The
International Coffee Hour is held each Tuesday from 2-3 p.m. in the
University Student Union, rooms 312-314. It is
among the several programs sponsored by the International Student Services
and Programs office to help international students to integrate into their
new environment, and it enables the Fresno State community to have access to
a great variety of cultures.

Carol Oates to speak Nov. 1
Joyce
Carol Oates, one of America’s most versatile writers and the author of a
number of distinguished books, will be featured Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the
University Lecture Series at California State University, Fresno. “An Evening With Joyce Carol
Oates: A Selection of Readings with Commentary,” will begin at 7:30 p.m.
in the Satellite Student Union, 2485 E. San Ramon Ave.

A new
revolutionary technology for heavy oil production that could stem the
decline of or even increase California’s heavy oil production as well as
have a worldwide impact on the present process of producing oil -- Electric
