Award-winning writer Joyce Carol Oates to speak Nov. 1
“An Evening With Joyce Carol Oates: A Selection of Readings with Commentary,” will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Satellite Student Union, 2485 E. San Ramon Ave. This lecture is sponsored in part by the English Department at Fresno State and the San Joaquin Literacy Association In addition to numerous novels and short story collections she has published in the past 25 years, Oates also has published several volumes of poetry and plays, five books of literacy criticism, and the book-length essay “On Boxing.” John Gardner has called her “one of the greatest writers of our time.” Her writing has earned her praise and many awards, including the PEN/Malamud Award of Excellence in short fiction, the Rosenthal Award from the American Academy – Institute of Arts and Letters, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the O. Henry Prize for Continued Achievement in the Short Story, the National Book Award for her novel “Them,” and in 1978, membership in the American Academy-Institute. “What I Lived For” was nominated for the 1995 PEN/Faulkner Award. The University Lecture Series is sponsored by the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the University Student Union, Associated Students, Coke and James Hallowell, KJWL, Borders and Piccadilly Inn Hotels. Advance tickets are available at the University Student Union Information Desk and at Borders. Tickets are $10 general admission; $6 Fresno State faculty, staff, Alumni Association members and seniors; $5 elementary and secondary students; and $2 Fresno State students. Prices on the day of the event increase by $2 for general admission, faculty, staff and Alumni Association members.
