Portugal will be topic of December Coffee Hour
It is among the several programs sponsored by the International Student Services and Programs office to help international students to integrate into their new environment, and it enables the Fresno State community to have access to a great variety of cultures. The purpose off the International Coffee Hour is to expand people’s knowledge about different countries and cultures and to create a friendly atmosphere to bring campus-wide and community dialogues with people from different backgrounds. This type of activity offers the opportunity to develop global friendships, share cultures of international students with the community, and to explore programs available to study, travel and work abroad. December programs include: Dec. 6 - “Portugal: A Small Country with a Rich History and Unique Culture.” Dr. Debbie Avila, professor in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literature (Spanish – Portuguese), will present an overview of Portuguese history and culture. She also will speak about the global influences of the Portuguese empire, from early colonialism to the dark years of Salazar’s dictatorship, and the gradual transition to the 21st century.
