"Spotlight on Service" highlights the outstanding community service of Fresno State students - as well as faculty and staff - that too often goes unnoticed.  Our university is committed to being a premier regional interactive university and to working with and in our community to address social issues and improve the education of our students.

Fresno State Intern, Bonnie Yun (at right in red shirt) coaches Fresno elementary students learning to resolve conflict peacefully. Yun is one of many mediator mentors working in Fresno Unified Elementary schools this year. In the context of Fresno Unified’s Partners in Character Education Grant, the Bonner Center for Character Education, and the Mediator Mentors Program are providing training and development for randomly selected grant schools. Yun is gaining valuable experience in working with children of all ages and ethnicities at Kratt Elementary while she performs more than 180 hours of service, including counseling-under-supervision of children and family members. Positive Character has multiple meanings at Kratt. Service to others is modeled by mentors and cultivated by teachers like Terry Klundt. Students recently mailed 43 boxes to soldiers in Iraq with personally-composed holiday letters, and student-assembled collections of goodies and treats. Kratt Elementary teachers are engaging students in learning through service. Yun models this value for Kratt children every day.
