Osher program starts with ‘America’s First Couples’
Two four-week series of lectures, “Mr. and Mrs. President: America’s First Couples,” begin the spring schedule for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, aimed at adults 50 and older who want to continue learning and exploring for the sheer joy of doing so. Allen Carden, Ph.D., a lecturer in history, teaches the course, which will be presented at 3 to 4:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Jan. 9 and 11.

The classes will be in the Alice Peters Auditorium and are free to members who pay a $45-per-person or $80-per-couple fee each semester. Nonmembers may attend on a space-available basis for $20 per activity. Osher programs in the coming months include “Do Libraries Have a Future?” presented by Michael Gorman, Ph.D., dean of library sciences and president of the American Library Association; “Valley Stories: Things Worth Savoring” with author and farmer David Mas Masumoto; and “Home Away from Home: A Story of Basques in America” with Jeri Echeverria, Ph.D., university provost and vice president of Academic Affairs.

Hispanic-Service Institutions grants deadline approaches
Feb. 1 is The deadline for applications for the Hispanic-Serving Institutions Education Grants Program is Feb. 1.

This competitive grants program is intended to promote and strengthen the ability of Hispanic-Serving Institutions to carry out higher education programs in the food and agricultural sciences.

Programs aim to attract outstanding students and produce graduates capable of enhancing the nation's food and agricultural scientific and professional work force.
