President Welty outlines promise of university’s change and growth

Change and growth at Fresno State that have gained regional and national attention have created momentum for additional achievements in 2006, said President John in his remarks at the Spring Faculty/Staff Assembly.

As he meets with business leaders, legislators and educators around the nation, Welty said, he hears “positive reports” about the university’s work in health care, agriculture, business, the arts and education.

The president said he was “encouraged” by the governor’s proposed budget, which would boost funding for the 23-campus California State University system and could allow for no student fee increase in the coming year, if the Legislature goes along.

Welty also cited progress by the Strategic Planning Committee, which is working on an academic strategic plan and updating the physical master plan to address growth and development of the campus.

He said the comprehensive campaign is “making good headway.”

“Everywhere I travel, I’m discovering that people share our values and are excited about our vision for the future,” Welty said. “The comprehensive campaign is helping us reconnect with our friends and build meaningful new relationships with prospective donors.  We’ve been sharing the aspirations of our faculty and students. We’ve been listening to our donors and carefully considering their ideas and suggestions. Often that leads to a gift…sometimes even a very large gift.

”Our donors are dreaming big dreams right along with us.”
