University’s first e-waste collection a success

Fresno State’s second electronic waste (e-waste) collection is scheduled Feb. 25 after the first e-waste recycling event brought in 20 tons of old computer monitors and TV sets and more than 10 tons of other electronic component waste.

Over two days in January, more than 450 people dropped off unwanted computer processor units, printers, scanners, video game machines and other electronic devices. The e-waste no longer is allowed in landfills.

Fresno State is a state-approved collector for e-waste – the only campus in California to be certified – and operates the recycling program with Electronic Recyclers of America, operated by alumnus John Shegarian.

Anyone is invited to bring e-waste to the parking lot north of the Save Mart Center (near Shaw and Chestnut avenues). Some material is recycled free, but some carries a modest cost for recycling.

The success of January’s event was attributed to the Public Safety staff, which dealt with traffic; Lisa Kao, the environmental quality manager, and Steve Martinez, director of environmental health and safety.
