Opening Friday,
Feb. 3, is the Student Recreation Center, part of the $17.6 million
West Complex adjacent to and architecturally compatible with the
Save Mart Center. The complex was funded with student fees and
private gifts.
The 92,000
square-foot, two-story building houses a 13,000 square-foot fitness
center (with cardio equipment and free weights), a jogging and
running track, two aerobic and dance studios, two racquetball
courts, four full-size courts for basketball, volleyball and
badminton, plus locker rooms and showers.
Two
academic-related components are part of the complex:
-
Opening with the recreation center
will be the Leon and Pete Peters Educational Center, a
300-seat state-of-the-art tiered auditorium with classrooms to
host public programs, workshops and conferences. The center was
made possible by a gift from the Leon S. Peters and Pete P.
Peters Foundation and will begin hosting events in April.
-
Scheduled to open at the end of March is the permanent home
of the Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship,
established in 2001 with a gift from William Lyles.
