Initial First Book project provides 5,200 books to needy children The joint effort of First Book and the Fresno State Campus Advisory Board to raise money to buy new books for underprivileged children in the Fresno area yielded $2,200 in donations and $1,250 in matching funds. The money is being used to provide books to children in literacy programs, shelters for battered children, housing projects initiatives, soup kitchens, after-school programs and other community-based efforts reaching children living at or below the poverty line. In the past three years, the First Book organization has distributed over 20 million new books nationwide. In its first effort, Fresno’s chapter has distributed 5,200 books.
