Provost’s Award deadline March 1

Provost Jeri Echeverria has issued a call for nominations for the 2005-06 Provost’s Awards, which honor full-time faculty members who set new standards of excellence at California State University, Fresno.

ADMINISTRATION OF THE AWARDS

Outstanding faculty members may be nominated in any of the following areas:

  •  Excellence in Teaching: Overall exceptional performance in the classroom that generates student enthusiasm and increases knowledge and awareness of the subject matter. 

(A stipend of $5,500 accompanies this award.)

  • Technology in Education: Effective and innovative use of  technologies as tools in the teaching/learning process such as web related instruction, interactive audio video and new computer applications. 

(A stipend of $3,000 accompanies this award.) 

  • Graduate Teaching and Mentoring:  Excellence in graduate level teaching, with particular emphasis on the special mentoring that result in the exemplary professional development and scholarly achievement of graduate students.

(A stipend of $3,000 accompanies this award.)

  • Faculty Service:  Outstanding service to the university community and the community-at-large.  Service activities might include exemplary contributions to ones discipline, faculty governance, service learning, community activities and other similar achievements.

  • Distinguished Achievement in Research, Scholarship or Creative Activities:  To recognize demonstrated achievement in research/scholarship/ creative activities.  This award was designed to honor recognized faculty achievements in any of the three areas of pursuit.

Promising New Faculty Award:  To recognize exemplary achievements in teaching, research/creative activities and/or service among all non-tenured, tenure track faculty.  This award is designed to honor new faculty achievements in any of the three areas of pursuit.

FUNDING THE AWARDS

Funding for the awards and administration of the program is provided through extramural sources. 

          PROCEDURAL GUIDELINES

Each academic year the Provost establishes a Provost’s Awards Committee.  The committee is composed of the following individual representatives:

  • Two faculty members are selected from a list of ten faculty members nominated by the Academic Senate

  • Two students selected by the Associate Students Incorporated

  • The Associate Vice President for Academic Personnel

  • One Department Chair, selected by the Provost

  • One Dean selected by the Council of Deans

  • The Administrative Assistant to the Provost

Any faculty member, administrator, staff or student may nominate any current, full-time tenured/tenured track faculty member for the Excellence in Teaching, Technology in Education, Faculty Service, Graduate Teaching and Mentoring, and Distinguished Achievement in Research, Scholarship, or Creative Activities Awards. However, only one nomination and one category per faculty member will be accepted.

Any faculty member, administrator, staff, or student may nominate any current, full-time non-tenured, tenure track faculty for the Promising New Faculty Award. 

The faculty members receiving these awards will be honored at a reception hosted by the Provost on Thursday, May 11, 2006.  The recipient of the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching will also be recognized and seated at Spring 2006 Commencement Ceremonies, and honored at the “Last Lecture” Dinner during the Fall 2006 semester.

These awards are based upon superior performances in the above mentioned areas and only the full-time, tenured, tenure track faculty members at California State University, Fresno are eligible.  There is no requirement that any category be awarded each year.  Previous recipients are not barred from consideration during any subsequent year.
