Mark Aydelotte (Office of University Communications) was named to the Advisory Council on Communications and Public Affairs of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. The association, chaired by Fresno State President John Welty, represents more than 400 public colleges, universities and systems of higher education throughout the U.S. and its territories, where 3 million students are enrolled.
Alejandro Calderon-Urrea (Biology) was interviewed on BBC 5 Radio about the role of genetics in an individual's physical abilities, specifically dancing. Calderon-Urrea, who admitted he loves to dance, said during the 6-minute interview that a combination of factors in the genes allows an individual to be a good dancer. Listen to the interview here.
David Zoldoske (Center for Irrigation Technology) was vice chair of the AB 2717 Landscape Task Force, appointed by the California Urban Water Conservation Council to find ways to cut the amount of water used on landscaping. The task force estimated up to 1 million acre-feet – about one-third of the water used to irrigate plantings now – could be saved through a mix of legislative, administrative and regulatory changes.
Publications Bill Erysian (Division of Continuing and Global Education) has published “The USDA Story: 12 Years of Partnership with Armenia,” which assesses the impact of USDA assistance to Armenia from 1992 to 2004. The book includes how Fresno State was retained by the USDA to help the Armenian Agricultural Academy reform its agricultural economics department and develop a strategy for implementing a nationwide agricultural extension and research program. The book also explores the role and long-term impact of nearly 350 technical advisors who served as agriculture specialists in Armenia in irrigation, dairy, enology, banking, small-farm management, animal husbandry, fruit and vegetable processing and education.
