Diversity celebration runs through Friday Diversity Awareness Week is under way, with a variety of events on campus embraced by the theme, "Diversify Your World: Celebrating Culture." Through Friday, April 7, there will be discussions, workshops, food and more that pay tribute to the vast variety of diversity that make the campus and the community a center for diversity. The week not only calls attention to the richness of cultural diversity, but helps build understanding and tolerance. Diversity Awareness Week also helps make everyone aware that diversity extends beyond ethnic and racial difference to include age, gender, religious and physical diversity. Organizers are the Associated Students, USU Productions and the Central Valley Cultural Heritage Institute with several sponsors. The week’s activities began with a trip Sunday to the Museum of Tolerance. Other events are: Tuesday – April 4 9 a.m.–noon: Seventh annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Conference 5 p.m.: Building Bridges, Tackling Fears, panel discussion on Sexism, USU Room 312 7 p.m.: “Walking on Sunshine” presentation and discussion with filmmaker Tracy Taylor, Alice Peters Auditorium Wednesday – April 5 Noon: USU Cultural Food Festival, USU Balcony 7 p.m.: Poetry Jam with poetry by Malik, Coffeehouse & Pub Thursday – April 6 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Get Out There Fun Fair, University Student Union Balcony Noon: Reflections on Disability and Society discussion facilitated by Advocates for Students with Disabilities and Services for Students with Disabilities, University Business Center Room 194 1:30 p.m.: Unveiling of Jane Addams sculpture, Peace Garden 7 p.m.: Oscar-nominated movie “Crash” with discussion by National Coalition Building Institute team, Satellite Student Union Friday – April 7 5:15 p.m.: Cineculture showing of “Maria Full of Grace” with guest speaker Dr. Otto Benavides, Kremen School of Education Room 170. |
