Middle and high school students gather for King conference Middle school through high school students are on campus today, April 4, to participate in the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Student Conference, which is composed of workshops and speeches. A closing ceremony that includes an awards presentation and entertainment begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Peace Garden just north of the Henry Madden Library.
Coffee Hour plans April ‘visits’ to Chile, Poland, El Salvador International Coffee Hour presentations in April focus on Chile, Poland and El Salvador. Today, April 4, Dr. Gloria Medina Sancho, an assistant professor in the Department of Modern and Classic Languages and Literature, will discuss “Gestures of Resistance and Power: Women’s Political and Cultural Activism in Recent Chilean History.” Dr. Tom Wielicki (Business) will speak about Poland on April 18 and Dr. Yolanda Doub (Modern and Classical Languages and Literature) will discuss El Salvador on April 25. Programs are presented at 2 p.m. Tuesdays in Rooms 312-314 of the University Student Union.
Diener talks about happiness tonight Dr. Edward Diener, a 1968 graduate of Fresno State and a professor of psychology at the University of Illinois, will discuss “A Science of Happiness” at 7:30 p.m. today, April 4, in the Satellite Student Union as part of the University Lecture Series. Tickets are available on a space-available basis at 6:30 p.m. at the Satellite Student Union Box Office.
Not too late for Get Fit participation Although the five-week Life + Work + Links Get Fit series began March 29, people still can participate after getting a baseline physical. The Wednesday, April 5, program includes a discussion about nutrition, followed by sessions April 11-13, 18-20 and 25-27 with personal trainers teaching low-impact aerobics and toning exercises. There is no charge for sessions held noon-1 p.m. in Education Building Room 140. Common Threads Awards will be presented Friday, April 7

Awards during Friday’s (April 7) 10th annual luncheon at
the Satellite Student Union. The event, which raises money for Fresno
State’s Ag One Foundation, the California agricultural Leadership Foundation
and other organizations, honors women with agricultural backgrounds who are
active in philanthropic and community service.
Nominations due for President’s Graduate Scholars Fellowship Nominations are due Friday, April 7, for two President’s Graduate Scholars Fellowships. These $3,500 fellowships are available to first-semester master’s degree or Ed.D..students for 2006-07. Each graduate degree program is invited to nominate its outstanding candidate who will begin graduate studies in fall 2006. Nominations are due in the Division of Graduate Studies Office. Cats rule at Secret Garden Party The recent gift to the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature of the largest known collection of cat books inspired the feline theme of Sunday, April 9’s, Secret Garden Party, sponsored by Arne Nixon Center Advocates. The midafternoon fundraiser will be in the garden of a Van Ness Extension-area house. Members of the Good Company Players production of “Cats” will provide entertainment for the fourth annual event. Vino Italiano scheduled April 20 The Fresno State Winery staff, faculty and students will host the fourth Vino Italiano, a tasting of wines made of Italian-varietal grapes from 5:30 to 8 p.m. April 20 at the winery. Light appetizers will be served and there will be discounts on all wine purchases that evening. Admission is $5 for wine club members, faculty and staff. FFA state convention includes campus activities Fresno State and the downtown Fresno Convention and Entertainment Center will host more than 5,000 students, advisers and supporters from throughout the state April 22-25 for the 78th California State Future Farmers of America Conference. Students get to explore careers in agriculture and hone leadership skills in workshops and competitions.
Health policy fellowships available The Central Valley Health Policy Institute is offering up to four Interdisciplinary Health Policy Research Fellowships beginning in June to Fresno State faculty for research and analysis of key health challenges for the San Joaquin Valley.
