A year in excellent service for Jumpstart Fresno State

By Amanda Coy
Jumpstart at Fresno State has been providing the community with high quality service since 2001 and this school year is no exception.

There are 69 Fresno State students who have committed to 300 to 450 hours of service throughout the academic year. That will add up to more than 22,000 hours of service to 250 children.

Jumpstart is a national nonprofit early-education organization that pairs college students with low-income preschool children to assist with their language and literacy, and social interaction and initiative skills.

In addition to our tutors, Jumpstart also recruits Fresno State students who work on various other service-learning projects, including:

  • The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, at which 16 student volunteers interacted with 365 children in literacy-based activities.

  • Kids Day, in which nine students helped raise $1,427 in newspaper sales benefiting Children’s Hospital Central California.

  • The Jumpstart Supply Drive, in which seven students were recruited from Alan Canton’s Marketing 101 class to plan, organize, publicize and implement a campaign. The students’ investment of 105 service hours netted $400 in cash and in-kind contributions.

In addition to other service projects, Jumpstart recruited 48 student volunteers, who collectively served 358 hours in the Fresno community.
