Elementary and middle school mediators will visit campus
More than 300 students from elementary and middle schools in the region are expected to participate May 11 in the university-sponsored Mediator Appreciation Day.

The peer mediators help prevent and defuse problems and conflicts that arise between their classmates over the course of school.

Alumnus Doug Broten, president of the Better Business Bureau of Central California, will offer inspiration for the young mediators to take back to their schools. The students learn dispute resolution techniques and are mentored by Fresno State students studying to become teachers, social workers, counselors and workers in other fields that benefit from knowledge about mediation strategies.

Student mediators will get tours of the Save Mart Center, the Downing Planetarium and the Peace Garden and lunch on the patio of the University Student Union. Fresno State faculty, staff and students are welcome to meet the student mediators during the lunch, which begins at noon.

This fourth annual event is sponsored by the Kremen School of Education and Human Development, the Peace and Conflict Studies Program and University Outreach Services.
