Historian
will discuss public education’s impact
The nation’s leading Chicana
historian, Dr. Vicki Ruiz of the University of California, Irvine, will
speak about “Big Dreams, Rural Schools: Mexican
Americans and Public Education, 1870-1950” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 2. The
free event is sponsored by the Central Valley Institute for Regional and
Historical Study, the Department of Chicano and Latin American Studies and
the History Project at Fresno State. It will be in the Leon and Pete Peters

Safari theme set for
faculty-staff picnic on May 25
“King Kong Safari” is the theme
of this year’s faculty staff picnic scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. May
25 on the lawn area of the Satellite Student Union. Fun activities,
competitions and food will be among the attractions.
Fresno State hosts
AASCU board meeting
California State University, Fresno
will host a meeting of the board of directors of the American Association of
State College and Universities on Monday and Tuesday, May 1-2. AASCU
represents more than 400 public colleges, universities and systems of higher
education throughout the United States and its territories. AASCU schools
enroll more than 3 million students, or 55 percent of the enrollment at all
public four-year institutions.

Fresno Grizzles
pay tribute to Fresno State
Fresno State Tribute Night is
scheduled Thursday, May 4, when the Fresno Grizzlies play the Tucson
Sidewinders in downtown Fresno’s Grizzlies Stadium. There will be a pregame
tailgate party and everyone is encouraged to wear Fresno State sports
apparel. Numerous contests and university-themed promotions are scheduled
throughout the evening. Details:

Golf tournament will benefit
Ag One Foundation The
35th annual Turf Day Golf Classic tees off Friday, May 5, at Madera Golf and
Country Club as members of the agricultural industry, Fresno State alumni
and friends compete in a fundraiser for the Ag One Foundation. The field is
limited to 144 golfers, who pay $125 each for lunch, golf, social hour,
dinner and the opportunity to win prizes. Proceeds benefit Ag One, which
promotes and supports the College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology.

Equine
Science Program open house is May 6
The Equine Science Program plans
an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at the Quarter Horse
Unit. The free event, intended for the community and prospective students
and parents, will provide information about the B.S. and M.S. degrees
available and showcase horses for riding and breeding. Details:

Earlier hours for
summer will begin May 22
Beginning Monday, May 22, the
university workday will be from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a half-hour lunch
period. The earlier workday, instigated to help save energy, will continue
through Aug. 18. Classes for the fall semester begin Aug. 21 and classes
