North wing of Madden Library will be razed during summer As construction of the new Henry Madden Library begins in earnest over the next few months, testing will continue in University Center Room 200, converted to a study space and materials testing area earlier this year. The Office of the Vice President for Administration’s reports the tentative schedule for work on the $91 million library makeover will see a construction fence going up early this month on the north side of the library by the Peace Garden. From May 19 to June 1, Services for Students with Disabilities will be relocated to the remodeled area of the University Center that formerly housed Carl’s Jr. restaurant. June and early July will be devoted to preparing the north wing of the library for demolition, which should be accomplished by Aug. 15. Work on the new building would begin the following week. UC 200, which helps replace some of the study space lost during library construction, also is a test site for furniture and flooring materials under consideration for use in the new library. Facilities Planning will evaluate the material for durability and ease of maintenance. To make UC 200 as user-friendly as possible, carrels and tables, power strips for laptops and blinds were installed. During summer hours, which begin May 22, UC 200 will be available to students from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays. |
