Fresno State Students Approve New Recreation Center, Legacy 2000

Fresno, Nov. 16 -- Fresno State student government leaders announced today that student voters approved the Legacy 2000 referendum, paving the way for construction of a new on-campus recreational center in the Save Mart Center. 1,934 students voted in the two-day election held Nov. 15 and 16 by ASI:

YES: 1,389  NO:  545

Votes are tallied by representatives of the League of Women Voters. The League supervised the two-day campus election, including staffing the four polling areas located across the campus.

ASI President Arakel Arisian prepares his statement in advance of the announcement of the vote.
The vote tally wraps up as media, administrators and student government leaders look on. A large crowd of students assembled in the hallway outside of the vote counting area.

The votes come in, and all polling areas vote decisively for the new student recreation center, Student boosters react with a cheer. Nikiya McWilliams (left), chairperson of the University Student Union Board of Directors was one of the key organizers of the Legacy 2000 campaign. "I can't wait to see the outcome of this building," she said, thanking scores of students who had come to watch the vote announcement.

California State University, Fresno is one of the largest universities in the state, yet it lacks a student recreational center commonly found at most large state and private universities.

Fresno State Students have now approved a plan to bring a full student recreational center to the campus. The plan is called "Legacy 2000."

A recent survey of 1,000 Fresno State students, indicated over 37% of Fresno State students belong to an off-campus health club. Sixty-seven percent of the survey respondents supported a slightly increased fee to pay for a on-campus student recreation center.

There are several new architectural drawings of the planned student recreational center.  To see all of the new drawings, including views of the interior of the student center, go to: SaveMartCenter.com. To go directly to the page featuring the renderings, click here.
