Fresno State graduate student Nickolas Vela is one of more than 200 college students selected for paid summer internships by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities National Internship Program. The program places students at internships at federal agencies, field offices, corporations and non-profit organizations in Washington, D.C. and other locations nationwide.
Vela is currently interning in the computer and network systems division for the National Science Foundation (NSF) in Arlington, Va. He helps maintain a Web portal that facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration on a new wave of technology called cyber-physical systems, in which physical processes are tightly intertwined with networked computing.
Vela, born and raised in Fresno, is pursuing a Master of Science degree in Computer Science. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from University of California, Berkeley. This is the second consecutive summer Vela has been selected for an internship through the program.
“I applied for this opportunity to expand my education to the work environment and develop my professional and personal network through service with the federal government,” Vela said.
The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities represents about 450 institutions committed to Hispanic higher education success in the United States, Puerto Rico, Latin America and Spain. More than 10,000 students have participated in the national internship program since its inception in 1992. Students intern for a duration of 10 or 15 weeks.
